Painting bedroom units?
Discussion
Any advice? Bedroom units are old fashioned and I want to paint them to make them look better.
Intend washing them down with sugar soap and fine steel wool to give a key.
Then paint the body in the same colour as three walls and pick out the detail in the contrasting colour of the fourth wall.
Just watched a program on CH4 the great house giveaway, one of the presenters painted the kitchen units in a blue colour then sealed it with a lacquer, turned into a disaster with a reaction between the two paints.
Anyone got advice?

We did our own kitchen cabinets in our first house. A good degrease, create a bit of a key then paint. No need to seal.Intend washing them down with sugar soap and fine steel wool to give a key.

End of discussion.
We painted our kitchen doors with it 3 years ago, they're not solid wood and are wrapped. We gave them a good clean and a very light sand. People still think we've had a new kitchen.
HI Mr J - when you say wrapped, is that in some plastic type material? Some of ours is coming away from the door (kind of like a sagging headliner).End of discussion.

You found this fine to paint on once keyed lightly?
Thank you
Exactly that, a plastic wrap.
We didn't have any issues with it pealing thankfully. I gave them a light sand with, I think, some 120 grit Mirka foam backed pads and a good clean. We'd removed all the old handles and filled all the holes.
We removed a few doors but generally left everything fitted to the cabinets.
We went with 3 coats of paint applied with these : https://www.toolstation.com/prodec-advance-mini-ro...
Then drilled and fitted new handles.

Bedroom and lounge, similar to above but from oak to painted...
I did two bedside cabinets with the complication of matching the colour to some new furniture so paint was mixed. Used a trade waterbased satin over waterbased undercoat. The original was laquered oak so that was very lightly rubbed down then degreased and cleaned with isoproprynol so everything bonded nicely.
Having got a half decent result on the bedroom stuff that could be scrapped if I ballsed it up I was let loose on the lounge. Again oak, same paint, different colour (not quite as vivid as the photo!)
