I've never seen anything like this except during acrobatics in a single seater.
How a commercial airliner ends up like this I have no idea....

Its nature. I have a keen interest in aviation, I have family and friends who seem to think planes are immune to nature and the laws of physics. One time I tried to explain just how dangerous it is flying at high altitudes when you are in a situation where if you go any faster its going to potentially stress the aircraft but if you go any slower you will stall. (aka coffin corner)
They just could not grasp it. Same with icing. We were flying in Peru and I told the wife we needed to be ready for a rough flight... she laughed and said I was worried over nothing. An hour later when we got off the plane after some pretty gnarly mountain waves and some CB activity she wasn't laughing any more.
Aircraft are designed to meet safety standards, but they are not invincible. Put a big object in a spin, its going to keep spinning.
