Not sure if the right place to park this, please move if needed!

I'm thinking about starting up, I know relatively nothing, just trying to think of something fun to do with the kids to get us out the house and you never know, we might find some interesting stuff!

Kids are only 8 & 4 love being outside and playing in the dirt, getting messy, so I'm thinking why not.

What sort of equipment do we need to get going, how much should I spend on a metal detector, any specific laws I need to be concerned about E.g asking land owners permission etc.

What have you found on your trips out?

I'm going to be that guy that says there's probably a club nearby.

Even if you don't join their activities you might get good advice and maybe some decent second hand equipment of better quality than you would normally buy as a newbie.

Speaking from personal experience as our archery club has had a couple of decent detectors for not much money.

A bloke I work with is in a club where they seek permissions from farmers and land owners to detect on their land. He has a motorhome and travels the UK visiting locations and he often brings in his finds to show me, usually coins etc.
