Apart from that..! redcard

About a year ago my long term (and soon to be living together) girlfriend decided that we needed a big fall out and a 'break', and, after a lot of deep and meaningful conversation that mostly revolved around my unreasonableness in refusing to take full and unequivocal responsibility for her actions, it became permanent.

Fortunately I own my own place and I'm reasonably independent (possibly a part of the problem I suspect) so on a practical basis I'm fine. Work is good, but I work from home, so although I have a small but close circle of friends, I can go days without seeing anyone. I'm okay during the day because I'm busy, it's about now, after dinner, where I sometimes find myself thinking 'what on earth am I going to do with myself for the four hours until bed?'

I enjoy reading, and do a lot of that, although that's a pretty solitary pastime. I'm not one for TV at all, I'll enjoy a good film once or twice a week, but that's not an every night thing. I'm not especially practical or 'hands on', so gardening or car maintenance isn't a thing for me. I don't want any pets for various reasons.

Which brings me back to the title of the thread. If you're single, or you know single people, what do you/they do of an evening?

Cycling is a great evening past time, this time of year at least (if not raining..) kills a few hours, you can explore new places and build fitness

I don't know many people who are single, but those that are seem to have a mixed bag of hobbies:

Scout leader
Football Coach
Amateur Actor
Knitting/Crocheting
Car Restoration
Theme Park trips

If I became single tomorrow (hopefully not - I am very happily married), I mean magically and amicably, I would probably get my tvr project finished an awful lot sooner.

In my single days, I used to go indoor climbing twice a week, which usually opened up other social stuff as the group would do pub/restaurant trips, house gatherings or stuff like Secret Cinema.

Would quite often take the long way home with a slow walk along the river or similar rather than the usual mad dash to the nearest station. Ended up buying a camera so I could stop along the way and take photos.

Took up the guitar which was a big time sink, if you're alone nobody cares if you spend three hours badly jamming along to all the favourite songs you can play with cowboy chords.

Hiking trips was another big one, we used to get a small gang together and go off scrambling somewhere or wandering around on top of Kinder Scout trying to find points of interest.

A bit of mountain biking (after I'd met my partner, but in the early days where I was still "functionally single" for 3-4 days a week), you can keep that going pretty late in the year with high power LED lights and not being that worried if you come back home with every square inch of both bike and rider needing a thick coating of mud hosing off.

Finally there used to be quite a bit of workplace stuff to get involved in, the team I worked in at the time had boardgame and pizza evenings and tutorial sessions for developing mobile apps or VR games.

Play world of tanks.... 10 years in and still good. It's a free pc game. But you can pay if you want.

Lots of other great pc games on steam to have a go and branch into a new interest. Many topics of all flavours.

DCS another free game if you like a flight sim and your pc is modern can pay for and this will really eat into your life if you want to learn to fly well say the f18 or a10a warthog etc.

Learn to dance. Bound to be classes nearby - Ballroom/Latin, Line Dancing, LeRoc/Jive whatever floats your boat... you'll meet lots of people and, as a fella, be in demand as most classes have many more women than men.

And don't worry if you have two left feet; so did I when I started and love it now (latin and some ballroom).

If you are sporty how about squash/racketball? A lot of people can only play after work which means evening games, 6pm onwards.

When I was single, I was never fitter, mtbing, road riding, running. When I wasn't doing that I'd go for the odd hoon in my fd3s. Failing that I kinda saw dating as a hobby.

Now I'm married, get on out the MTB maybe once every two weeks, fd3s has been off the road for 2 years and DIY is my primary task which takes up my spare time.

Gosh, what a post.

Clubs, sports, preparation for trips usually.

Monday was usually running after work, Tuesday Hockey, Wednesday indoor climbing (in the winter), Thursday hockey, Friday pub with friends, Saturday depended on weather, but was often a match, and Sunday hill walking. I would mix in rest days as I wanted. I was usually pretty fit then.
But even now, it's hard to fit everything in. Bit of climbing, hockey, I serve on a committee or 2, so things to organise, I fly, so there's things to learn, and paddle, so things to prep. I organise a lawn cutting rota for a charity, etc etc etc. It's hard to know where the time goes.

I kind of miss reading a book.

one thing I've noticed, is people at pains to join social groups. Me I hate them, being single means you can do whatever you want, and that is pretty awesome tbh.

My mate is in a similar boat, he goes out for a walk everyday or rides one of his motorbikes. Last summer over the solstice he rode one on a three-week trip up to the most northerly point of Norway.

I'm not in that boat but if I was, I think I'd be able to keep myself entertained; hiking trips in the Lakes, getting on with car resto or booking a flight to any corner of the world and going to explore.

All the things married guys wish they could?

I will admit as a happily married man it’s really weird and disconcerting being left alone for more than a couple days, I run out of jobs on the list

Depends what you're into and how social you are. I'm not single but if I was I'd easily fill my time with drawing & painting, producing electronic music, going for long solo walks and runs in the countriside, taking trips to the coast and having regular breaks away to Cornwall. I'm an introvert who doesn't really care about socialising and group activities, which would help a lot.
