Yesterday I decided to deactivate my Twitter account.

I feel better already.

There are some things I will miss, certainly, but it had just become impossible for me to carry on there. My two main areas of interest there were Formula One and American politics, mainly the presidential race. Discussing F1 is impossible, the level of toxicity is just off the charts. Rational discussion seems impossible. Everything is very aggressive, anyone not agreeing is 'crying', and should 'cry more'.

With US politics, it may be even worse. It's a breeding ground for lies and disinformation, and at the top of it sits Elon Musk, a man with a very concerning amount of power for someone who appears to have the emotional maturity of a teen.

So, I am out, and it already feels great.

Has anyone else done the same?

This is the only website I post on and have zero SM presence since retiring my IT business.

I don't miss it at all.

I've never been been on Twitter or Instagram or Tiktok, but I used to spend a LOT of time in Facebook and used to help manage a quite large group there. After a disagreement with the group owner, I decided to leave the group entirely, and that I decided that there really was no reason for me to keep going back to the site altogether. I kept my account alive as it's the only way I can contact some friends and family around the world. But I no longer log in more than once ever few months. I no longer send birthday wishes, I no longer comment on what people are up to and I no longer care if people comment on or "like" my posts, since I don't make any. I still get birthday wishes at that time of year, but I don't even respond to those.

Yes, I do miss out on some social events because of it, but my life is so much better without Facebook.

Is PH social media? It feels more like Web2.0 before social media. It's not that social since we are all more or less anonymous, although I know some of us meet up from time to time. If it is, then PH is the only social media I can stomach. No ads, no stupid GIFs, no local groups whingeing about some overgrown pathway. I love it because of its simplicity.

Done exactly the same with Twitter/X. It's like the algorithms deliberately picked st to depress or anger me and then posted increasing amounts of it.

Much happier having done it. Thankfully Instagram doesn't seem to the same so far.

I am however considering my presence on facebook. Problem is I use the groups and marketplace regularly, groups are great for car clubs and the like and marketplace is preferable now that ebay fees are off the charts. I would miss the interaction with friends and family, but fb manages to sweep most of that to the side anyway.

For me twitter is entirely passive, but hugely valuable. the interesting discussion is between notable people, so i don't feel compelled to contribute. which is one reason why changing the blue tick thing was a big step back.

I don't think there is nearly as much value in just chatting to other members of the crowd. But that's not what it's really for.

Dont worry too much, you can still get your fix of this on the f1 forum.

Haha, indeed, but despite the presence of a couple of blatant trolls, the F1 discussion here tends to be relatively well informed and generally good natured.

Deleted Facebook New Years Eve 2012, missed it a bit for the 1st couple of years but it's been a positive.

Tried Instagram for a few months a couple of years ago, not my thing.

Still on Twitter but nowhere near as much as I did, just for getting news from my local football team.

I started using Reddit a few months ago, enjoying it so far even if it can be quite toxic at times.

I'm more of a reader than a poster on here, I try to stay away from the politics stuff.

I gave up Twitter when that loon bought it. In truth, I never really understood it. Facebook, I get. I only used to use Twitter to lodge a complaint if I was having trouble getting through to customer services. Nothing faster than a frustrated message to British Gas or whatever. Even the bands I followed on Twitter have a Facebook presence, so I still find out about gigs, etc.

Mind, I'm too old to understand the TicToc/SnapChat generation. What's all that about?

I've never done Twitter, Instagram.

I do Facebook to communicate with friends and family, but I have the highest privacy settings and my nickname, rather than my real name.

I deleted my LinkedIn account about 10 years ago, plus I am retired now.

Twitter seems to be full of sycophants and narcissists.

I used to be an obsessive tweeter and would spend hours per day on Twitter.

Twitter was superb in the minutes/hours after a major news event and absolutely awful in toxicity in the days/months afterwards. Twitter was at its best during the Eurovision Song Contest, when no matter what witticism you thought of, someone would have already tweeted that thought but in a funnier way.

I gave up about 2 months after he bought it. It was getting gradually worse by the day, the levels of racism and abuse had got to intolerable levels and I personally think he is a terrible human being. I miss the old Twitter, but will never use X.

I only have PistonHeads as a social platform now. I deleted Facebook in 2014 (never missed it). Wouldn’t touch TikTok or Snapchat with a barge pole. I genuinely think social media has ruined the world.

Twitter is just a media platform, that's all. Use it how you wish.

You can go into the library and take out War & Peace, or Katie Price's biography. You can turn on the telly and watch an Attenborough documentary, or Celebrity Toaster Swap. You can buy a broadsheet newspaper, or the Daily Star.

On Twitter, take what you want from it, and ignore the rest.

Got rid of the lot of them and don't miss it for a minute, wasted far too much time on there although I still use messenger for talking to family and close friends.

Every so often my Twitter timeline will show me someone being hurt in a horrific accident, just randomly. Which makes it unsafe to view at work, which is annoying.
