Thanks. I think what threw me was the what looks to be an air tank on top, which by the use of google isn't air but some sort of oil reservoir/expansion tank.

There are 2 of these things next to each other. any guesses to what they are building?

Left one looks like a voltage regulator. Both are made by Wilson in Leeds.

The fact there's two of them suggests it's possibly a data centre, each fed from different feeds for resilience.

The tank on the top is called a Conservator tank and is normally 2/3rds full of oil, it takes up the oil expansion as the transformer warms up. The 7 large upright structures (3 on the left, 4 on the right are oil coolers, you can see the cooler fans on the outer left hand cooler. The small unit on the left looks like a much smaller transformer too.

I'm only asking as I wondered exactly the same thing, what this is all about as it's been quite a change to the structure and it would be nice to know whats next to my gym and about 2 miles from my house smile

Any idea whats going into that building? I heard its a data centre.

Exactly, I’ve been wondering the same since work started. Looks like there are trying to make a Chernobyl style sarcophagus.

A 450 tonne one of these was supposed to be travelling up the M6 last weekend, from Heysham, to be placed on a distribution site in Longtown just the north of Carlisle but it was cancelled at the last moment, not sure why. It was going to take up 2 lanes of the M6 on it's way, that's quite a beast!

Slightly O/T - so I apologise, but the expertise here to answer not only what "it is", someone explaining the tank on top and someone else knowing who made it shows just how much expertise resides on this forum. Thank you to all who share their knowledge smile
