Mrs stuck in Brussels after Eurostar strikes
Discussion
I am in need of some education on this subject and forgive me for being ignorant.
Why is it, the only time’s a group of people strike, it’s only when the public are punished.
I’ve never seen an estate agent or a McDonald’s worker strike.
It’s a bit like the just stop oil protests, they punish the public instead of blocking government buildings entrances.
What happened to integrity

Because they're crippling a critical service, and they know they can effectively bully their employer into caving in to their demands. Of course, this only works in the public sector...try that in the private sector and the company will eventually fold, or eventually move overseas...either way you'll eventually be out of work.
I'm upset over this - I'm meant to have a Christmas with my son and his mother for effectively the first time - they've offered her the 27th December as the next available slot. I've paid for Orley to Cardiff tomorrow at a stupid price.
Good news though - I may get a refund for a trip I booked 6 months ago to get the best price -
I'm the most sad for those who can't afford to suddenly switch just before Christmas. I have no sympathy for the strikers at all.

If estate agents or mcdonalds workers went on strike the public would definitely feel it. Causing inconvenience is what makes strikes effective it's stty for the people who get caught out by it but a few days of st service is better than being underpaid for years/decades.
I get this, 100%.But at the same time, you lessen your chances of success if you piss of the people that might otherwise support your cause.

You're not supposed to tell everybody that many rail staff are surprisingly well paid. It seems to have been rather easy to achieve over the years when the various staff went on strike/work to rule etc. The authorities tended to eventually give in to the continual blackmail - but greater involvement by the government in recent times has tamed the situation somewhat.

Your not wrong but it affects the employer far more than it affects the public. My colleagues and I were on strike last year we've had no real pay increase since about 2006 we are still having to sort the occasional problem caused by the guys who covered for us whilst we were on strike its caused a huge amount of grief for our employer and did eventually get us a semi decent pay increase. But at the same time, you lessen your chances of success if you piss of the people that might otherwise support your cause.

...a strike doesnt help anyone, Look at history, places like BL british steel etc, the only winners are the competitors, its a very short sited action by workers for short term gain, if you dont like the pat etc of a job then do something else. Nobody ever wins.
Yes to that.A couple of weeks ago I caught the beginning ot a brief interview on TV with a train driver, his work involved driving trains, on tracks, in the UK, certainly a skilled and responsible job but not one involving piloting supersonic space-hops to the other side of the world following years of post-graduate study and many more in training (no pun intended). He said he was earning £90k. Good for him. In the wider context, what this didn't do was ruffle up an envy streak, what it did was to prompt a look at career pay for train drivers. Info available online claimed a starting salary of £30,000 increasing beyond £75,000 as above. It also hardened my view of rail strikes for more pay and bigger bonus payments, no matter how much spin around safety / ticket offices / working practice / rail card ages is layered on the demands.

Getlink (who own Eurotunnel) posted record profits for last year, whilst simultaneously telling staff that they couldn't afford to give them a larger bonus to cover the rise of cost of living. So they went on strike, Getlink tried to play hardball and the French government stepped in to tell them to tell Getlink to wise the fk up.When are rail workers ever not on strike?

Good on the staff and shame on Getlink...

How , if the tunnels closed, or not working properly, the ferries will be rammed, only way is to fly if you can get a flight
Strangely I looked - plenty of ferries depending on the crossing - you don't have to just think Dover Calais...Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
