Delivery companies often do this, don't they? There was one a while back (whose name escapes me) that rebranded but were the exact same outfit delivering the same st service just in different coloured vans

No doubt the service will still be crap.

I worked for one of the competitors for 18 months, it's scary how old the systems are and the warehouse technologies, the costs must be huge and the maintenance must be eye watering.

In this space it's a race to the bottom in terms of cost to deliver, and there are a lot of self-employed/low wage people doing the deliveries who get paid to deliver, not to take back to the depot and try to deliver again.

In my time working for a competitor they were happy they were only losing £10M per quarter, but were still trading, I know Covid turned them around no end and I suspect Hermes must be in the same boat, unless they have new systems, and working practices I can't see a rebrand doing much TBH.

Surprised they are doing this, always thought the name Hermes was a good bit of branding.

Yes they obviously make a lot of cock ups but so does everyone else, I wouldn't avoid ordering any normal day to day products just because Hermes was delivering it.

I think it's the nature of the parcel delivery business, until the country has some sort of computerised "locking box" on the front of every house, there's always going to be problems.

My heart sinks when I'm told something is going to be delivered by them.

Missed a delivery last Saturday as I got a text saying something would be delivered in an hour when we were two hours away, didn't bother knocking on the neighbours' door.

Sunday got a text saying delivery would be between 3.00 and 5.00pm. Fine.

Got a text in the pub at 1.10 saying delivery would be between 12.00 and 2.00 followed by a picture of my front door taken at 1.05 saying they can't deliver it.

Monday hear a knock at my neighbours' and some bloke moaning about being unable to deliver to next door: Me!
Opened the door and there he was holding my box of trainers, not bothering to knock at mine.

First world problems and all that, but they really are fking st and always have been.

I'm quite impressed with Amazon Delivery and DPD as they have near real time tracking - your driver is 8 stops away from your house etc. Essentially more people who work for these companies are full/part time professional couriers.

Hermes have areas where deliveries are undertaken by Mums and Dads in school hours only, students who can only work around their Uni lectures etc, so for a lot of people deliveries can be erratic.

I send a fair amount of parcels and moved from Royal Mail to Hermes because RM were terrible for losses, I have virtually no complaints since moving to Hermes to be fair,

The other issue is that buyers expect cheap if not free delivery on everything now, probably a lot to do with Amazon Prime but ultimately when customers expect low postage cost businesses have to cut the costs too.

My regular Hermes guy is excellent and is thoroughly nice normal guy just earning a living - tracking with Hermes works well and for what they charge for sending etc. they're great value - ive heard horror stories (from customers and staff) but ive had no issues to note (other than one parcel being left at the wrong house, but in fairness the label hadn't printed correctly and this was sorted within about 15mins of reported delivery)

FedEx however, ive had no end of issues with them lately. High value parcels lost / found / out for delivery / no delivery attempted / out for delivery / no delivery attempted / lost again / found again / returned to sender / resent to me / lost / investigated / mysteriously turns up when under investigation ... total joke

Prior to COVID I was shipping out two to three parcels per week.

Always well packed light weight, fitted into a wine case ( 6 bottle).

So of the 300 or so I sent 1 was lost and one damaged.

All were to Business premises

By way of balance the Hermes lady who looks after deliveries in our small town is amazing and provides a terrific service. She is clearly frustrated with the Hermes network behind her at times, however.

The DPD guy in our area is brilliant too

UPS seems to be the worst with items mysteriously going missing from the nearest depot to us on a regular basis

I think this is the key.
We’ve had the same Hermes and DPD drivers (admittedly in a small town) for years and so have built up a rapport.
They know there’s half a dozen houses they can drop our parcels at.
Parcelforce however….

We get 3 or 4 deliveries a week, spread around most of the big couriers as well as Royal Mail.

The only company we have issues with is Amazon. They either log the parcel as "delivered" when they haven't even tried (actually gets delivered the next day), or they don't ring/knock and hide the parcel somewhere.

RM, Hermes, Yodel, DPD, UPS etc. all deliver pretty much when they say they will, knock and wait for the door to be opened, or leave in my designated safe place if there's nobody at home.

I think the issue that some have with Hermes is because their drivers are self-employed. It really depends on how diligent the local driver is.

Well I often have to play hunt for the parcel when they deliver. For some reason despite having a porch, with ample space for a silver back gorilla, they leave it anywhere from down the bottom of the garden to the bin house or neighbours ffs. WHY? They left a dvd player once out in the snow despite porch being unlocked. I found it down the garden because I knew what they were like.. Wow..

The Hermes guy who delivers to our village is terrific. It's very noticeable when he's on holiday.

Reminds me of when Yellow Pages re-branded as "Hibu" in about 2014. That didn't go too well

Used Hermes a lot and only 1 lost parcel from about 350 sent.

Claimed on free insurance with no issues.

"My" courier lives 200 metres away and is a good guy
