Located in a sleepy Yorkshire village.

Spotted it from a corner of my eye, had to quickly stop next to this fancy place in order to take a photo.

Yes, traditionally they used to have two smaller holes either side for hands/arms, then a larger one for heads in the middle. You get locked in and then the locals are invited to throw, i think traditionally, rotten fruit and veg at you.

Some variations like this one might be hands and feet through which would be excrutiating at a guess, i might be old but i'm not old enough to have ever been in a set of stocks.

You are confusing stocks wth pillories.

Two different things.

They would be ideal to allow a pair of adulterers to spend some time together...

I’ve seen this before, I think it’s a glory hole? I haven’t seen them outside though.

Perhaps it’s slightly off topic, but I do know that Barkisland Hall was at some point purchased by Baron Joseph Kagan (Gannex/Kagan Textiles Limited) for corporate entertainment.

The then-Prime Minister Harold Wilson (a friend of his) stayed there on occasions. nerd

It could be to hold two people, one sitting each side.
