Boston Dynamics dancing robots

Ahhh, isn't that lovely.

But imagine them moving 10x as fast and with weapons... If you don't think that is being worked on, you are wrong.

Having seen war first hand, I would prefer robots destroying each other than people.

Tracking autoguns have been possible for many many years but never deployed, wonder why.

Except it won't be robot vs robot, it'll be robot vs human. Not good.

I certainly wouldn't bet against the US military paying a large proportion of the development costs - it happens all the time.

To redress the balance, though, here's a cheerful little short robot film to enjoy...

I think that's because your mind isn't really conditioned to expect mechanical things to move like that.

Worked on?

Its the US, they probably already have a few warehouses stuffed full of the things.

Or orbiting the earth ready to be dropped anywhere on command. Lack of life support and consideration opens up some interesting deployment options, cruise missile might be another.

They've been deployed for decades, just in larger calibre air defence.

The thought of one of those with a rifle in it's claws is exhilarating and terrifying in equal measure.

I think Hyundai (??) have now bought out Boston Dynamics and have a controlling interest at least...

There are a few sides to this. The advances in computing and mechanics are startling, and have the potential to bring life changing capability to those that can afford them. On the other hand, cuddly impressivley dancing robots are what they show off in public - We should be a lot more concerned about what is not being put on youtube.

Ever since the Bigdog robot there has been no doubt in my mind that they will be on the battlefield in my lifetime. Why send a team in to clear an area when a machine can walk in and do it for you.

If it gets shot/damaged send another one in. When it's all over just replace a few parts and you're back to full strength.

The future soldier will be a gamer (operator) or engineer (maintainer). We already have pilots in warzones who don't need to set foot outside their own country.

From my recent experience with electronics, the best defence will be a slurry of river mud and water. Nothing in my office seems to have survived even slight contact.

Also I don't quite understand the benefit of two legs in a weaponised robot. I'd have thought four would be more stable and able to negotiate more tricky terrain.

as said this is just the cuddle identifiable PR face of robotics, use your imagination to think of what else this level of tech might be use for - No reason why the military version wouldn't use 4 or 6 legs and be capable of all sorts of nightmarish maneuvers.

I'd be more worried what it will do to your job prospects once they give it AI
