It's because people don't read these days. They only ever experience it spoken so they write what they think they hear.

My particular bugbear is, "fed up of" rather than the correct, "fed up with" and, "bored of" instead of, "bored with". It's the same problem. The latter is becoming more heard in speech so people tend to write what they hear rather than what is correct.

Agreed. Along with less instead of fewer.

Particularly when listening to Elvis Costello's Oliver's Army. "One more widow, one less white n-gger". But then, fewer wouldn't have scanned. laugh
