Some great ideas in the "Flipside of Dominic Hyde" - love the 50's saucer style time machine.

I just watched Appleseed Ex Machina again tonight.

I'd forgotten the total awesomeness (albeit stupidly implausible, but never mind) of the Cathedral assault at the beginning.

Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UDpTbFvOHg from 4:33 to 8:02 or thereabouts, if you haven't seen it.

The film itself is quite derivative, with stuff nicked from Aliens, Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, Battle Angel Alita, Patlabor; all sorts really. But it's visually stunning

Ex Machina is superb, who cares that it has inspiration from other hollywood/anime? As long as a good story is told. Don't forget that it was directed by Jon Woo
Shirow is brilliant, I also like the original Appleseed, AD Police, Dominion and the original Bubblegum Crisis. I had forgotten about Patlabor

Thanks to this thread I watched Vexille on YouTube. Really enjoyed it and in fact the female lead looks just like the girl in Ex Machina.

Vexille, without a doubt. And Ghost in the Shell, if you haven't already seen it.

That's strange. That suit is so similar to the Landmate power armour in Appleseed ex-Machina. Right down to the two pairs of arms.

Which episode of GitS is that? I gave up on Standalone Complex towards the end of 1st Gig and never bothered with second.

Episode 22 I think.

You're not the first I've heard that gave up on it, its quite long and drawn out, and very wordy (well at least the Laughing Man fansub version I have is, I found the official subs/dubs to be somewhat dumbed down in comparison).

I gave the series to a mate who lost interest half way through.

Personally I loved both series, they are so incredibly complicated and I get something more from it each time I watch them.

I see what you mean about the similarities in the armor, I guess its not that surprising, Gits and Appleseed are both Masamune Shirow creations

yes and they don't half talk a load of rubbish in a lot of anime, including GitS. You can have someone talk for 10 mins without actually *saying* anything. It's just random words almost.

Gundam Wing had the odd episode like that too and you find yourself thinking "oh FFS get in your Gundam and go shoot up some Mobile Dolls!" hehe
