As an ex smoker I love the smell of cigarettes and cannabis smoke. I hate the smell on people, clothes and ashtrays though.

The smell of failure hehe I see a lot more scummy losers drinking alcohol, it's about time that they legalised it and stopped wasting money and time pretending to control it

It must only be me who actually thinks the smell is quite pleasant? To my nose, it smells a bit like Christmas tree pine needles.

Never smoked the stuff and no intention to ever smoke it, but I don't mind the smell of it. I've seen loads of comments and threads over the years where people get really mad about the smell, especially if they can smell it in their garden or whatever, and it baffles me.

But then again, I did comment recently that I liked the smell of cigarettes and cigars despite being a non-smoker, so clearly it's me with the defective sense of smell biggrin

Agree with the comments though, it is absolutely everywhere these days. You smell it all the time in traffic, in town, in city, coming from peoples gardens, in the park, everywhere. People will just openly stand smoking it in public without a care in the world.
I used to commute out of London on the A13 and this was noted every morning.

Evidently plenty of people blazing on the way to work at 630-700 while driving. Crazy.

Agreed. Plus it makes me feel sick.

I used to motorbike in and out of the city on the A13 and I too was amazed at how frequently at that time people were smoking it. I can’t imagine sitting in your car or work van at six thirty in the morning and deciding that what you need right now is a joint.

I smoked weed years ago, but no longer. I'm not a fan of the smell of it, I'm not sure if it's the potency, but the smell has certainly gotten stronger in the last 10 years, maybe more.

I think it'll likely be decriminalised / legalised in the next few years, and maybe then it will become a bit more like Alcohol and some more subtlety and variety will come into the market and it won't smell so much.

New York is way way worse, its everywhere, you notice more when you cant smell it than when you cant.

We went in 2020 and got the odd waft, went in October last year again and it had ramped up markedly. Rarely actually spot where its coming from though.

Manchester is pretty bad for it, and I do think the Police have given up, its so blatant, a bit like the electric motorcycle riders, or as this morning, a Moto-X bike with no plates blasting past traffic, I would say that's a higher priority than weed.

Its weird how people smoke it all day, you smell it in the morning, I would never think of cracking a can of beer at 9am, but a spliff seems to be required for some to get going in the morning, thats a sad state of affairs, get your day done then relax, then people moan why their situation is bad. I had a day off the other day, was gardening, decorating and doing various admin tasks, finished, had a few beers and a takeaway. There seems to be a class of lad these days and all they seem to do is weed, Xbox/PS5 and self abuse.

cant stand it. was out shopping the other day and a builders van in the car park was leeching smoke, the stench of weed was so strong you could smell it 20-30m away

how they get away with it when driving is ridiculous (see phone use, watching tv etc as well)
I have to say, the last couple of times I have smelt Cannabis in the air has been as a result of 'tradie' types - the first drove past in a 2003 Honda CRV, gobbed a fat cloud of smoke out of the window as they went past that lingered for an age (is it really that wise to be driving a motor vehicle whilst being so blatant about your recreational drug use?), and the 2nd was stood on a street corner at 7:30AM smoking a joint before hopping in to a battered old Mercedes Vito that pulled over to pick them up (again, 'getting blazed' before a day of work?). Didn't paint a great picture of those who use cannabis for sure, though appreciate it'll be used by people at both ends of society.

Can't say I see a massive harm in it (like other recreational drugs, most people are big and ugly enough to decide if they want to put this crap in their bodies), though suspect it would probably be better to 'legalise it' and then rake in the ensuing tax revenues.

Legalising it will go exactly the same way everything else does when the government starts meddling - ie. make the problem worse. As has happened over in the US when they did this, the taxation on top made it too expensive plus the drug cartels are obviously not going to stand by and watch the government put them out of business, guns or no guns.

I visited a theme park at the weekend, we hadn't even got from the car to the entrance before the smell of herb wafted under our noses. I understand that some people get nervous on rollercoasters, but really??

It is the smell of the summer in most of SE London, so the nice weather has brought that familiar sweet reek with it in the past few days.

I don't mid the smell, somewhat prefer it to tobacco tbh. It is slightly alarming how many drivers seem to partake however. Notice that especially when I am on my bike.

It seems to be basically legal in all but name at least as far as personal consumption goes, so it might as well be legalised officially. Generate some tax revenue to offset the social costs, and perhaps also reduce the levels of drug related crime - although I am not wholly convinced by that argument it's worth a try.

i don't use it myself but I do drink and I have smoked so can't really get holier than thou about it. Choose your poison and all that.

I hardly believe this myself so I expect lots of incredulity. I went through my teens in the sixties which was the era of tune in, turn on, and drop out, and the whole flower children thing but I truly have no idea what cannabis smells like. I guess that I must have smelled it but not known what it was. My childhood and teens were spent in the London Borough of Ealing which may not be Chelsea or Hackney, but it's not the Bible Belt either.

Promiscuity, however, was everywhere it seemed but mainly in fantasy and less often 'Splendour on the Grass'.

"Zero Hedge (or ZeroHedge) is a far-right libertarian financial blog and news aggregator."

Forgive me, but I won't take much notice of that source.

From what I can gather from more mainstream sources, Cannabis decriminalisation usually results in:

Increased usage. I don't think you can escape that, if its legal people are more inclined to try it.
Increase in Tax revenue. Equally makes sense.
Decrease in violent crime.
Huge decrease in Cannabis arrests, probably the most 'well duh' stat.

My 2p is that, as this thread shows, people are using it, a lot. If otherwise law-abiding people are doing something that's not overly harmful or dangerous and apart from the smell isn't hurting anyone else, it should be legal by default.

What I would like to see from any legalisation though:

A break in the link between Cannabis and 'hard drugs'.

A change in public opinion on Smoking and Driving, we used to think Drink Driving was okay, even when it was illegal, less so now. Policing plays a bit part of course, and they can and do test for cannabis on the roadside, but I'm sure some pot heads will tell you "I drive better on weed" in the same way people used to say "I'm a better driver when I've had 1 or 2".

I really dislike the smell of it in smoke. Pungent smell that can linger for hours. Especially bad when a patient comes in early morning having just smoked a joint as I then end up working in a room that smells of stale cannabis and air freshener (in an attempt to clear the stench).

It's bloody marvelous stuff that I can't get enough of.
Not a great smell though, edibles are way better / more fun.
