Black bin collection was on Thursday, they somehow managed to empty every single one except mine. Ring the council "oh sorry sir, I will let them know and they'll come back and collect" - they didn't.

Ring again on Friday - "oh sorry sir we'll send someone out, but they don't work weekends or Monday so it will be Tuesday". They didn't collect it.

Ring for a third time - "oh sorry sir I've let them know, they'll collect it within 5 working days, the logistics of getting someone out to you are very complex."

It's picking up a sodding bin and throwing the contents in a lorry, I would say how hard could it be but obviously the answer is very.
I have had exactly the same problem, with my garden waste bin. I wouldn't mind as much but we are invited to pay an extra charge, to have it collected.
Our council held an open consultation to see if those wanting garden bins would like to either have them free but only for half the year when stuff is growing and the bin is more needed, or to pay for it and have it all year.

Response overwhelmingly in favour of free for 6 months. Council response was obviously to ignore that and choose the option that would bring in money. rolleyes
At least you get 12 months collection. We pay, and only get 6 months. And it ends when we are still knee deep in Beech leaves, from street trees the responsibility of the council!

My local council charges £35 ( going up to £40 soon ) - my response was to spend £30 on a large compost bin which still isn't full after 3 years of grass cuttings etc.

I paid up for a couple of years - sheep that I am - but on the third asking they mucked up my card payment, didn't issue me a sticker for my bin and so no collections for me.

My garden includes a small wooded area, backing onto more woods that are inaccessible from anywhere other than my garden, and which now contains a large and quite useful compost heap. Wish I'd done that from the outset.

Grass clippings alone don't make great compost apparently, I found adding the contents of my office paper shredder to it every time I mowed the lawn resulted in some decent compost.

Take the opportunity to piss on it from time to time, great mix of chemicals to improve its health.

Indeed, a top tip I got a few years back from a former senior civil servant and life peer with whom I was enjoying dinner (I knew his daughter). He specified male urine.

'Why male' says I 'is it because of the different hormones and what have you?'

'I think you'll find' replies he, pouring me another glass of his excellent wine, 'that it's more to do with the practicalities of delivery'.

I recall a very convivial evening, but that's the only bit of the conversation that's stayed with me for 22 years. It must've appealed to my sense of humour at the time (and now).

Stopped at a local petrol station to fill up my motorbike and the attendant would not switch the pump on until I removed my crash helmet, even though it is a flip up one so shows my face. So I was a good boy and removed it, went in to pay and asked him why I had to remove it as I they had never bothered before and I use the petrol station once or twice a week, he said he needed to see my whole face. I just paid and turned round and there is woman behind me with one of those useless Covid face masks covering half her face. I just shook my head and walked out, next time I will take off my helmet and pull my neck tube over my face, see if I get served then.

I asked about it at a local garage some years ago, apparently they'd had a lot of kids on stolen bikes riding off without paying. Having to show thier face deterred them from filling up, and I guess if all the garages in an area do it they dump the bike instead. I suspect stolen cars are much less of a problem.

I have just ordered a new Yaris Hybrid. I was surprised to see that it doesn’t come with a spare wheel. No worries, said the jolly salesman, Toyota have an excellent scheme where you just ring a phone number if you have a flat, and a van full of spare wheels comes along and rescues you.

What happens when you are deaf and don’t own a smartphone, or can’t even hear a mobile on loudspeaker outdoors?

Oh …. said the salesman.

I wouldn't take it personally, fuel theft is on the up and up, unfortunately. I was with my GF the other week and she was filling up her car, using the app so the attendant could already see that it was paid but for some reason she didn't switch the pump on. Mumbled something overt the tannoy so my GF went over to the desk (was about 9pm). She came back laughing, the attended was very pleasant but pointed out her reg comes back to a Grey car and my GFs is currently Purple since she had it wrapped (needs to update DVLA) so the attendant wanted to check before sitting it on as they've had a lot of cloned plates come through!

Never realised they get the info on the car before they switch the pump on but I have seen a couple of guys literally fill up and casually drive off laughing without paying there before so assume they were on dodgy plates.

Well, fuel theft is very easily prevented - pay by card only and insert your card before filling.

This means fewer people going into the shop for an overpriced energy drink, bag of crisps or lads mag an that would affect profits.

Except when a stolen/cloned card is used...

(you clearly missed the part in my post when I said she was paying BY THE APP. So the amount was already authorised before she lifted the nozzle. That's how bad it's gotten that they're checking the reg regardless)

I think the problem there was THE APP!!!!!

Apps are universally terrible and frankly on their way out. Most places and clubs I frequent have given up on trying to maintain apps and just use a website now as you can get them as either a COTS package or service for far less.

I don't really want to use a spying, personal data hoovering app just to do basic things. Card and cash work fine.

The Esso App is great, but it does look like you are driving off without paying. hehe

O/T

I don't know how true this is but I heard somewhere that Police are re-prioritising "drive-offs from petrol stations" because they believe that the Fuel companies aren't doing enough to prevent it. They think that all companies could install "Pay at Pump" but don't want to because they want customers to come into the shop.

Eh? Sorry but what the hell are you on about rofl

The app has nothing to do with the story except to point out the fuel was ALREADY PAID FOR (or rather authorised). Had we wanted to pay cash/card, the outcome would have been the same in that the staff wouldn't have switched the pump on as they ran the reg and checked it matched the car.

As for "apps are universally terrible" I think that's a you problem (in the nicest way possible). The Shell app works perfectly fine and saves me time walking and paying at the kiosk. As do all the other apps I use smile

Difference between church bells and the call to prayer is that church bells are a pleasant chiming sound, whereas the call to prayer is usually delivered through a crappy PA system, crackly, and unintelligible. Nothing racist about that. If someone played church bells through a PA system it would probably be the same!
A lot of church bells ARE played through a crappy PA system nowadays. Too few religious campanologist types, it seems.
