It occurred to me today that the the rule that 'its' isn't apostophised when used in the possessive sense is counter-intuitive.
We say "the dog played with the cat's toy"
But we also say "the cat played with its own toy", rather than "it's own toy".
For parity both - or neither - should have an apostrophe really.

Put "its" in with "his" and "hers" and it's easier to grasp. We say "the dog played with the cat's toy"

One school of thought suggests the origin of the possessive apostrophe is explaining about, say, the coat belonging to Robert. "Robert, his coat." We now use the contraction, "Robert's coat."

That's better. There's always room for improvement.
I have an apostrophe in my name - when you spell it out on the phone half the folk either have no clue what you mean and ignore it altogether or put the piece of punctuation in closest proximity to their fingers on the keyboard. Quite a few go for a hyphen which I also have later on in the spelling of my name - that really confuses them.
Makes for some interesting post.
