I failed that one, had three letters right from the start but there were just so many options. 4 of us do it first thing in the morning then share it...this morning there were three fails and one got it on the final attempt. Never been that bad before.

I've had a couple of failures in recent weeks. Which has annoyed me beyond reason. One the other day, I'd got three letters (wrong places) on guess two. By guess four I had three letters in the right places. Then I got the last letter but it was pot luck for the first letter. Hairy? Lairy? Fairy? Dairy? Too many possible solutions for the number of guesses I had remaining. Grrr! rage
Unless you’re playing in hard mode, the solution is to use one guess as a throwaway to eliminate letters. 28th March, I faced this: 6 possible answers and 4 remaining attempts!

Using the throwaway I guaranteed myself a win. It still took me to the last possible letter to get it right though laugh
Excellent example of the throwaway.

Got 2,4 & 5 in two and still failed. By coincidence my only other fail was with those same three letters early on a week or so ago.

First fail today for me. WTF is that all about - it’s just a name isn’t it? Never heard it used any other way even in the US.

I was missing the first and third letters after 3 rounds, used a couple of throwaway which were no help, thought there was only one possible word left for my final try.

It’s annoyed me more than it should.

Well that was a complete fluke today.

Got what turned out to be No5 but in the wrong place on line 1.
Got Nos 1,2, and 4 on line 2.
Coupled with knowing a fourth letter, entered guess 3 just as a laugh thinking it's a name or not a word so perhaps not allowed.
Aaaaannd BOSH!

Can appreciate people being irritated by that one.

No idea! I got it in 6 but was a pure fluke as I had no other letters that could make a word

By the looks of it it's mostly an abbreviation of "home run" (baseball)

I got it in 3 today, assumed the Simpsons character, didn't realise it was an American colloquialism as well.
Just one of those days where you're reminded it's an American game with American words in it.

Failed today, stupidly went down the rabbit hole of having three of the letters in the correct places and reused them for each of the remaining guesses. Should have used a throwaway to give me some more letters instead of wasting my guesses reusing the three letters I knew, only eliminating two more letters each guess.

Annoying.

Still, I got it in four but Mrs Molehusband was really annoyed with the word when I gave her a clue to get it in five.
I was 4 today also. You have to play it with American spellings in mind as we’ve had some of those too.

Yes good tip in that scenario. Not sure I’m clever enough to pull it off.

Same as Twing and Toxicnerve, got it in 6 but only because there were no other sensible letters left. To my knowledge, it's baseball slang.

Do we need spoilers in this thread? I'd hope no-one would visit until they'd done the day's puzzle.

Yes, but that context only makes sense with the qualifier of the previous word. You wouldn't say "I just got on the property ladder, now I'm a homer!".

You can tell I'm still grumpy about it.
