Good to hear.

I'm still amazed nobody joined the dots earlier. Basic maths tells you he wasn't old enough to serve in the Falklands.

He wasn't even old enough to have joined the RN, let alone be on a ship in a combat role.

Baffled that he didn't resign at the outset of the investigation.

Seems a bit odd, but what does 'operational tour' mean. Different things to different people.

Bloody hell I hope he is right because if Mercer is wrong that's a crappy thing to do. Regardless of politics many people respect Johnny Mercer for being a-political when it comes to veterans.

Silly way to trash your credibility.

Same. With 32yrs service he could have been retired by now, or had he already retired and returned to service?
Just the fraud investigation outcome to await now.

Baffled me too - given he would have known with absolute certainty that not only was he "guilty" but that it was going to be trivial to prove that I would have thought quietly falling on his metaphorical sword at the start, possibly even working out something with some of his pension intact in return would have been the obvious course of action. All he's done is ensure maximum humiliation for himself, and that his antics won't be easily forgotten.

A tour in a recognised war zone, i.e Afghanistan, Iraq, Northern Ireland, Bosnia etc.

Agreed. The bloke isn't questioning his service or how many tours he did though. He seems to be questioning if he had been "in combat".

The BBC report doesn’t mention whether or not he keeps his pension, but he’s being investigated for fraud by his former police force in Staffordshire

Well I once had the pleasure of a tour of a mortuary and then observe a post mortem, so that's a tour and an operation (kind of). So where's my medal? biggrin

Maybe there's a chance he can keep his pension as he had passed two thresholds (30yrs service, and reached age 55) for being able to claim it. If he was sacked before reaching that threshold then I'd suggest not. I'm not sure if being sacked afterwards entitles him to still claim it?

Which presumably costs money / takes resources

Define in combat.

If you were a chef at Kandahar was that in combat ?

If you were a medic/nurse from the navy pushed over to land operations was that in combat ?

Military intelligence , if you never left Kandahar were you in combat?

Sorry for the thread derail…

Mercer has tweeted this recording in an effort to prove hid claim

https://x.com/johnnymerceruk/status/18041839981359...

However, he (Mercer) says “I was a Minister in the department, he never has”…. Has he shot himself in the foot here? Admitting he used his role as a Minister to look into his campaign opponents?
