A 3 litre Volvo engined Marcos is for sale on eBay.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1971-Marcos-Volvo-3-Litr...

This has prompted me to consider why these cars hit the market so rarely. Were they made in considerably less numbers than the steel chassied V6 or is it that owners tend to hang on to them for longer? The present owner has had this one for 27 years!

Is it something to do with the straight six engine? Are these any better than the V6?

I've also noticed that the straight six TVRs - the (Vixen)2500 and 2500M seem to be harder to find then the V6 counterparts.

I'd be interested in your views or insights as to why this is the case.

Regards,

Chris

Marcos used a range of Ford and Volvo power plants in its Coupe in the early years and the Volvo 1800 was a very successful engine option. In the late 60s, Marcos made an attempt to export Ford engined 3 litre v6 coupes to the USA but the Ford v6 engine failed the US emission tests. To get round this emissions problem Marcos returned to the Volvo straight 6 in 3 Litre form as an option particularly targeted at the US market. Consequently, many of the straight 6, 3 Litre cars went for export and suspect that the car advertised on eBay was originally built to export spec (albeit that it is not LHD) as it has an auto box which is very rare in the UK.

Hi,

I had a 3L Volvo Marcos many years ago. I ran the car as everyday transport for over 2 years - a great car!

I subsequently had a TVR 3000M with the Essex 3L V6 - torquey but the wrong engine for me, felt a numb lump after the Volvo unit tbh.

The Volvo unit revved much more freely and sounded much better, also usefully more mpg!

Having said that, I'd have another 60s/70s Marcos with either engine if I could!

Sorry for the delay - but only just come across this thread

I don't know anything about the Volvo 3 litre lump but I have owned and raced a V6 3 litre Marcos for some years. once these are properly rebuilt by Ric Wood or similar then they get decent power and torque figures and with straight pipes they sound glorious.
In race spec running triple webbers we get just over 280bhp although the life of the engine is limited. I think if they run a less extreme cam then they can get 240bhp and be a good fast road engine.
The only problems are cost and mpg - it is not cheap to get decent reliable power out of the engine and with triple webbers they would not qualify for a Eco award. It is fair to say that they are not revvy engines but in race spec they go to 7,000 rpm

Another 3 litre Volvo has cropped up for sale.

I'm still unsure why these surface so rarely. There are several V6s for sale.
