Ferkin Unite! "no pay rises, only missed targets by 3% etc"
Well I haven't had a rise for 2 years, am not bonus eligible at work, but if i missed my target by 1% my company can say no bonus.
Yup, Gatwick is not a BAA airport.
I'm trying to plan a trip to Chicago 31st Aug to 10th Sept, but now i'm hesitant to book flights - thankfully seeing family, so no hotels to piss about with. But this is my 1st family visit for 4 years. (Going LGW via to Chicago, not an option)

i know a bit about this as i used to be one of them, their pay reviews take so long to go through that they are usually 2 or 3 year deals, they keep getting offered 2% rises over this time period, this has been happening since Ferrovial bought them out 5 odd years ago, so at the rate of inflation compared to their rises they are losing loads of money. They are losing their bonuses every year and they have none of their perks anymore. Just because people miss their holidays they kick up a stink, what if it were you? if you have an average office job no one would notice if you didn't turn up. I left as i saw this coming, i feel for them i have a lot of mates still there.
Civil Service pay has been effectively frozen and was only going to be 1% anyway. To suggest people are losing "loads of money" is nonsense, however, as most people are paying record low mortgage repayments so it balances out. For one, I would rather have a job than a redundancy and am willing to share the pain. It's not really a question of being exploited or the Government knowing the workers will swallow it, it's a simple case of economics and a big axe so if more people keep their jobs for the same or even less pay, then so be it.
Unite have a deathwish and no foresight to realise that business doesn't work unless it can make a profit. The number of people who can afford a holiday is going down so if they want to sacrifice not only their jobs but the whole airline then go right ahead because no other bugger will employ them.

As i said 2% over 3 years, and its been happening the past couple of times, they didn't strike last time. So 4% over 6 years is pretty s
t compared to the inflation we are seeing.
It's more than I've got in the private sector working in manufacturing. In fact if I worked it out I may well find out that my pay growth over that time has actually been negative following pay cuts last year in the depth of the recession.
t compared to the inflation we are seeing. Zero sympathy for them I'm afraid. Welcome to the real world.
I'm due to be flying California on August 25th. I'll be damned if I'm not going. This is going to be a long weekend waiting to find out. Wish I knew what the hell was going on.
You'd like to think that they would never imagine closing what is probably the biggest airport in the country, but christ knows what will happen.

As others have said, in the past when workers were exploited on all grounds, unions had a part to play in gaining basic human rights.
Nowadays, UK & European law covers all of this and unions no longer serve any purpose other than to try and destroy the remaining industries we have to make themselves feel important.
2%? I'd have that - no pay rises for two years now as my company fights for survival. Unite are behind possible strike rumblings here too and that will be the final nail in the coffin! A job with no pay rises has to be better than redundancy and a shrinking job market. These people are idiots!
Ban them, ban them all!!

I have a mate who works there , thinks nothing of asking for double shifts one day ,then phoning in for a sicky if he doenst feel like it or the sun is shining .Managing those people must be a nightmare .
I hope they wake up to the idea that having a job at this present time is good .

We've got our honeymoon flight booked on the august bank holiday weekend. Crossing fingers atm but not happy...
I'm just trying to stay positive and go on the facts dude. The airport has never been closed before. In reality they really shouldn't let it come to that.
I know they said that the airports would close, but only half the employees responded to the poll. Surely they'd be able to keep it open with a skeleton crew, I don't know about that though, maybe there is a minimum requirement that have to be on site.
