We are planning on heading to thonon-les-bains next week with the tent but after looking at the weather we are reconsidering......

Bordeaux region is another option and the weather is looking better.

But what do people reckon, Thonon has the alps and lake Geneva, Bordeaux has the national park and the sea? We just want to chill out and take in a bit of the scenery...

Help, we leave 4am saturday!

For me it would be Thonon-les-Bains every time! Fantastic scenery and right on Lake Geneva! Bordeaux is nice as well, but mountain scenery and great driving roads is the winner for me.

+1 for Thonon. Great place. If you do go, they have a great municipal beach:

And just down the road in Amphion is a great pool / water park

The whole coastline from Bordeaux to the Spanish border is a fantastic area to chill. You have Bordeaux at one end for some city/culture stuff, the posh vineyards too. Then the Dune de Pilas (allegedly the biggest sand dune in Europe), and 100 or so miles of beach before you get to Biarritz/Bayonne. Nice area to visit too.

Darn. Now I fancy going.

It's still low season so I'd suggest the Ile de Re over anywhere else.

I'm with Smiffymoto. Sure the Alps and lake Geneva have some great scenery, but I'm not sure how they look at (down on?) campers. The Midi Pyrenees region amazing scenery, (Tarn and Averyron gorges, pyrenees in the background, great history and ancient cities (Carcasonne, Albi, Toulouse) and great empty driving roads. Bordeaux has some great beaches but it's all a bit flat (like Norfolk).
