Talk to me.

Looking to go with the O/H for a long weekend in early May. Can't decide between which centre to stay in, found a fair few nice hotels but would like to be within walking distance of stuff - food, shops, beach etc.

I know theyre right next door to each other but which is better from experience?

Depends what you mean by a night out. IME you eat better in Marbella. Find a place with a load of Spaniards hanging about outside waiting for a table and the chances are it will be good, or better than good. If you want I can let you have a list of places that are good value for money. Or at least they were before sterling went down the stter.

I'm a bit biased though, as I have a place in Marbella. smile

PB is OK for having a beer, and looking at flash motors, and big boats, but personally, apart from that, I think it's a bit naff.

Just out of interest, which hotels are you thinking about?

Place you rent out or live in?

I'll compile a list of the ones I've looked at so far and post them up shortly.

Thanks!

We live there for part of the year. We have a flat in the centre next to the 'Parque de la Constitucion'.

Both are terrible in my experience. Much preferred Cannes for a break.
I would agree with the earlier post recommending the Don Carlos - we stayed there by accident but it was very nice as it is far enough away from the masses. You'll need a car if you decide to stay there.

yes

It's worth a visit, and a beer sat watching the world go by. The only place I would bother eating at is Picassos (be prepared to queue), just don't venture too far back or you'll think you're in Brighton with all the stag and hen parties and 18yos on their first holiday..

If you don't want to hire a car, there is an air conditioned coach that runs between the airport and Marbella bus station, and it is ridiculously cheap (IIRC cheaper than the toll fare on the motorway). I'm not sure what times it runs out of season though.

e: found it, 4 euros each way! a taxi is 30+ http://www.ctsa-portillo.com/ima/pdf/aeropuerto.pd...

Don Carlos is a bit out of town but there is a nice harbour nearby called Cabopino which has a good beach and casual places for lunch. Otherwise lots of options in Marbella to suit all budgets. Definitely visit the old town. You can walk from Marbella to Banus if you're feeling energetic otherwise there are plenty of taxis.

Quite agree, I lived there for 15yrs and Banus is a s--t hole would be really handy if they ever painted it or demolished it, and Marbelle used to be fantastic 20yrs ago before it became a sh-----e.

As was said previously if you wish somewhere decent go to Cannes.

I remember when a 12mtr berth was selling for 5mil Pesetas 20yrs ago.

In Puerto Banus, stay at the Gvadalpin. Presidential suite is awesome! Stayed there 2 nights last May for my brothers stag weekend.

Cheers.

That pretty much sums the place up, chavs with cash and chavs without. Plus the ubiquitous hen/stag parties staggering round with highly original t-shirts/sombreros giving the British a bad name. Antibes/Cannes or somewhere with some class would be a better bet.

Went to PB in Jan 2009 for a weekend. It was practically dead and they still wanted 4-5 Euros a pint. The sea front is nice enough and the weather OK but nothing much to do there at all bar "porn alley". Nice boats, nice area but nothing brilliant. We stayed cheap at the Hotel PYR which was OK.

I prefer Almeria/Roquetas de Mar/Mojacar personally, Roquetas being an ideal base for driving up into the Sierra Nevadas for some great driving roads to Berja, Laroles, La Calahorra and Alcudia de Guadix and a visit to Granada to see the Alhambra Palace is a must and heading up the Sierra Nevada will usually net you a scoop as they develop cars up there. Fabulous roads in that corner of Spain.

Oh and I saw this in Puerto Banus:

Underwhelming TBH.

Central Marbella all the time (although I'm biased as I live there), so many places to eat, it's cheap and it's very Spanish away from the paseo. Banus is just worth a visit for an hour to see the boats, cars and people other than that avoid like the plague

Been to Marbella a few times and spent 4 days in PB in Jan, its ok and Marbella has some great restaurants but truly I can honestly say that I thought Marbella and the general area was a sthole, totally lacking in character, there are far better places to go

Guess it depends where you stay and where you go, the old town certainly doesn't lack character and as a base to go visit other places it's superb
