Driving holiday in the US
Discussion
I've never been to America before and quite fancy going next year. The longest we could take off work would be 3 weeks.
How feasible would a driving holiday be over than amount of time - is it worth looking at going coast to coast, or is 3 weeks not long enough? Is there a more established driving holiday that people do for that kind of time limit (pacific coast highway?)
I'm sure loads of you have done similar - any advice? We'd probably be looking at hiring a car rather than a motorhome and using hotels/motels.

Do a search for pacific coast highway.
In three weeks you could certainly to a decent tour of Ca although I've personally not done PCH.
Did the pretty standard LA, San Diego, Vegas, Yosemite, Monterey, San Francisco tour over 3 weeks a few years ago but it's a multi-centre holiday with drives inbetween, rather than a driving holiday per se.

I would recommend 3 weeks up and down the west coast - you'll have a great time out there.
Fly into San franciso, head north up through Napa (wine country) and onto Lake Tahoe for some amazing scenery and then just a bit further up to Virgina City to see a bit of the old Wild West.
Drive back down to San Fran (perhaps stay for a few days - its probably the best US city) and then make your way south down the Pacific Coast Highway. Pleny of good towns on the way, Santa Cruz (where they filmed Lost Boys), Monteray etc - I would recommend stopping off in Carmel as its a great town.
You can then jaunt all the way down to LA (although i would avoid that place like the plague) and maybe onto San Diego if you really like driving. Coming back, drive inland a bit and head onto Grand Canyon, Las Vegas (worth a couple of days there) and then onto Death Canyon and Yosemite Park (fantastic place).
Its then about a 5 hour drive back to San francisco - job done !
(NB - used to live out there - I miss the driving holidays !)
