Places to stay - northern Corsica - Recommendations...

Hi all...
Croatia has proved all but impossible to actually go to (flights north of £280!! I could fly to America for that!), so we're considering Corsica as we can get there at a sensible cost (£100 each)...
Anybody been there? Where should we stay?
It's just the two of us, so I'm assuming a hotel is our best bet.. and it's a bit late notice.. as we're going on the 30th August.
...thinking Calvi is the best bet so far, for beaches, restaurents, stuff to do, driving into the mountains from, etc etc.
