Sat 19th September... quite a long way off.

Swindon to paddington, returning ticket = £40

2 Singles £14 into london, £7.50 back.

Why?

Supply and demand.

Many people will pay to leave Swindon in favour of London.

Very few the other way.

The return ticket is only so priced because no-one has yet bought one. It was arbitrarily priced on the basis no-one that left Swindon would choose to go back.

yes. And it might also be cheaper if you broke the journey into segemts. Same train, same seat BUT if you bought, say Swindon to reading, then reading to London it sometimes works out cheaper then the one ticket. Just show the relevnt ticket at the right time.

I thought it quite funny biggrin

To the OP - you're not comparing like with like are you?

The £40 day return is flexible - the singles require advance booking and you have to use a specific train - no different to airline fare rules on flexible/non-flexible tickets. There are only a certain quantity of the £7 singles, then the fare increases.

Funny maybe, but not helpful... wink

That does explain the matter, thanks!

I put in specific dates and time, the first offer was £40 for a return ticket. I thought it was odd that they then say 2 singles could be cheaper - why not offer the best price for those dates/times up front.

But flexible/non-flexible tickets makes sense.

When I do an advance search it does offer the singles first, and then I can choose to view the flexible returns - on the FGW website (not sure about Trainline - same booking engine but you have to pay a booking fee whereas there is no fee on the FGW site).

Just remember that you must take the train specified on the ticket - you have to pay the full fare if you miss your specific train.
