Route to the Three Valleys, French Alps?

Hi all.
Just wondering if any of you well travelled guys, (and girls), can offer any advice?

We are spending three days travelling to the French Alps in August, (and three back after a weeks stay).
I would appreciate any info on a good scenic route, (or routes), taking in any places of interest.
We will be camping en-route.
The downside is, there are three of us, (our lovely daughter included), and we are taking a motor home!
She had volunteered to travel on the shelf of the chim but my wife said that could be irresponsible!

I would use www.viamichelin.com and click on the 'scenic' option !

We always go the most direct route from Calais - Arras - Reims - Beaune - Lyon - Albertville - Moutiers and up the hill.

Wherabouts are you staying in the 3 Valleys?

Do you have 3 days to do the French leg of the journey? If so thats a generous allowance to get to the Alps. I would be tempted to dip into Provence ether before or after? Orange, Gordes, Iles sur la Sourge being worth a visit.

Personally for me unless you head over to Normandy I wouldn't bother with anything north of Paris.

You could head through the Champagne region Reims etc and into Burgundy. Some amazing little villages there and you can pop into tiny little Vinters and buy some great wines. Chablis and the Cote d'or being obviously very famous but there are some great little villages in Yonne such as Irancy.There is also Saint Fargeau (on the tour de france this year) has a great castle with a 'spectacle' put on in the castle grounds that is really quite impressive! It involves something like 600 people putting on a show showing the history of the region

which ever way you go check out Annecy and make sure you stop there - the lake is something else to see on a sunny day and the old town is a great place to spend some time. Lots of camping round the lake as well.

We are going for 2 weeks from 2-8-09.
We have the use of a flat at Ruberty, Les Bruyeres for "whenever".
Thought we would take a scenic route there and back taking in some recommended sights and stay in the mountains for about a week.
I am sure you are right, we will stay south of the direct route.
If there are any other sights you can suggest, I am all ears!

Epernay and the champagne region is lovely, and where we stop en route to the Alps. But you will probably have to book as it's August and all of France will be on holiday, non-tourist areas will be quiet/closed and tourist ones will be busy.

How about travel via Belgium (Bruges, Gent) then maybe Spa, Nurburgring and then through Switzerland?

From a Pistonheads point of view, it's essential for short stopover in Reims cos it's a great place, and you can taste, buy adn drink champagne there, but above all and make sure you go and find the old road racing circuit complete with restored vintage pits, garages,stands etc by the roadside.
