Memphis, New Orleans, Houston - fly drive
Discussion
My friends in Dallas said Houston was very commercial and polluted. So I went to Austin, very college based good fun and the capital buildings are quite something. And San Antonio very very nice city with the Alamo to spend some time looking over. Going up tower of the Americas is worth it too. Houston looked like almost every other US city (admittedly from the freeway)
New Orleans has lots to offer steam boats, live music in so many bars along bourbon, horse and carriage tours etc.
Hope this helps a bit!

We did a Deep South loop from Sanford to Dallas and back a few years ago. We went up through the Appalachian's just edging into The Carolina's to Gatlinburg (bit touristy but fun with a Star Cars museum and Cooter's Place, Dukes of Hazzard). From there we did Nashville, Memphis (Gracelands is great & I'm not that much of a fan), and on to Fort Worth and finally Dallas. Coming back we swung further south but it was 2006 and Katrina had just blown through.
It depends how many miles you want to cover and what your interests are, next time we go it will be a tour of gigs we want to go to.
Look out for Love Bugs though as they are corrosive to the paintwork and go in a convertible, it's the only way!!

Having lived in Houston, albeit a few years back now, I would agree with Joe20vt, if you are going to Texas I would recommend San Antonio and Austin, both very good and very different, Austin is very much a college town with a younger crowd in the pubs/clubs but fun nonetheless, San Antonio is just a fun place to be and the Alamo is a must do.
