Ditto!

There are plenty of things to do, but not if you have your wife and kids with you!

LOADS to do in dubai, some great shopping, wild wadi is good for the kids, can go on some lovely boat trips, some good food there. and lounging around the pool and beach in the sun is what its about..

yes it a horrible place to live long term, but for a short holiday its lovely..

i live down the road in oman and drive to dubai on the regs for shopping and a bit of night life.

p.s. dont have sex on the beach smile

Plenty to do there...IF you have a lot of money and don't mind being parted from too much of it.

We spent 4 days there on the way back from Japan...and both of us would quite happily not have bothered, for what it cost us...probably THE worst VFM in the world anywhere! And sh'te service too, once you're out of the 5* hotels.

Anyway, you ARE going, so:-
- be prepared to spend a LOT of money, wherever you go.
- research in advance - the amount it could save you is staggering
- find out about any freebies (buses, links to other hotels) and discounts that you can get
- use the supermarkets and corner shops for as much of your drink and nibbles as possible...probably 20% of hotel prices!

Ski Dubai is the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East and offers an amazing snow setting to enjoy skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing or just playing in the snow. Young or old, there is something for everyone, from the beginner to the snow sport enthusiast. Ski Dubai is a unique mountain-themed attraction that offers you the opportunity to enjoy real snow in Dubai all year round.

Too hot now for being outside during the day.

But there's enough to do indoors as it's a short stop.

I've got s timeout (or something similar) guidebook you can borrow if you're interested - I live near Wokingham so not too far from you - happy to meet halfway and lend it to you.

I also feel quite bad that everybody - incl. me, is being so negative about Dubai, now that you've booked it - it's like anywhere I suppose, it's what you make it. Although I do refer to Dubai as Hot Milton Keynes.

I'm presuming you are already booked so won't try to talk you out of it.

It is bloody hot at the moment so you are going to be doing stuff indoors or in water, Atlantis water park and Wild Wadi are both great ways to spend some time but watch out for the sun and heat. After that you are pretty limited to indoor entertainment which means malls and the like, ski Dubai as mentioned is a great sight but dull after an hour particularly if you can ski.
If you want to see the last bits of old Dubai and the souks etc then do it at night everything is open at night until 10pm or so it will still be uncomfortably hot though bearable for a short while.

Go to the museum which is worth a visit then walk through the Bastikiya area and have a look at the old courtyard houses now converted to galleries and restaurants, then stroll through the cloth souk and get an abra (small wooden boat) across the creek. The creek area gives a fascinating view of how commerce has worked in the region for hundreds if not thousands of years, wooden dhows are still plying the seas between here and India and as far as Zanzibar.

From the creekside go through the spice souk to the gold souk which is a sight worth seeing at night and that's about it, get a bus back to your hotel and a cold beer, you'll need it.

For eating and drinking Madhinat or Souk al Bahar are the best areas both have AC and provide multiple choices, it is expensive though especially if you like wine with your food. The bar at the top of The Address hotel gives a great view of the Burj Dubai though it is not cheap.

Lots of shopping in some of the worlds biggest malls and there are a few bargains at the moment because of the well publicised woes of the city

This is the best Holiday entertainment you can get. I've been all over the world on Holiday's. However, this is the best I have ever done in my time, I highly recommend you do this!

+1 on the 4x4 in the desert. The drivers are a bit nuts though...

Agreed, grab a copy of the yellow pages from your hotel room and ring around the tour operators in there, I think it's around 120dhs for the evening per person (I talked them down for three seats) includes pickup drop off, dinner in the desert, sunset view etc.

I think these are the people I ended up with.

Loads to do.

River cruise, wild wadi, various desert activities, shopping malls are great, resteraunts by the ton, just walking the streets is great.

If you are giring a car I would advise a trip to Abu Dhabi or at least get out of Dubai for a bit of time. Watch the driving though, especially on the motorways. Incredibly dangerous.

I had a friend who was tragically killed on only his second day in Dubai in a car accident.
