Ok here goes…..

In the fortunate position to have sold my businesses recently and decided to take the summer off and spend more time with the family (pay back for not being so good at that for last 10 years!).

We have been thinking about going away for the whole of August and initial thoughts were fill the Grand Voyager with the tent and go to France etc

However we have just had 2 weeks on the Costa Brava in Spain and it was stupidly expensive - £9 for 3 ice creams is just mad and £5 for a beer not much better!

So I’ve started thinking should we go somewhere else for the 4 weeks that may be more expensive to get there but a better proposition (for the money) as a holiday where I can relax without thinking ‘how much is this costing us’ every 10 minutes.

I’ve not travelled very extensively (USA and Europe only really) so really not much of an idea where to start considering.

Things to bear in mind:

1. I have 3 children 9, 6 and 4
2. Their idea of a good time is playing and going in the pool….not shopping or looking at coloseums…they are just not old enough to care about any of that yet.
3. They can do 10 hour flights but not much more – they have been to Disneyland in Orlando (child mecca) and handled that fine

I’ll probably never get the chance to do this in my lifetime again so would appreciate your pointers if you have done this before or have travelled a lot?

HELP!

Jason

In all honesty....if you can handle the heat...twin somewhere with Dubai...there is so much to do, none of you will get bored....you can even go skiing! The beaches and pools in the hotels are superb....2 weeks there and then onto somewhere else for another couple of weeks....Maldives is first suggestion...and no, the kids wont be bored!

All depends on budget though.....

Edit: Maybe Dubai to Kenya? Beaches and wild animals?!

Keep it simple and something of an adventure.

Kids might like the sight and sounds of a Disneyland-type scenario, but it all-to-soon becomes familiar to them and a massive financial drain on the parents.

I'd head for the west coast of France, find a highly-rated campsite which has a forest bordering the beach and let them go feral for a month. They'll not forget the dens they built, the games they played, the friends they made, the open-air cooking, fishing and exploring for the rest of their lives.

And the cost will be no more than shopping at the local supermarket. If you're there for a month, you can still mix in some great day trips to castles and towns with great markets etc. It'll give you and your OH a good opportunity to kick back and chill out too, rather than having to drag them round some place by the hand.

Letting kids create their own adventures beats formulaic theme parks every day of the week and, as I said, they'll thank you for it forever.

That was exactly plan A and your post has put it back to the top!

Keep the suggestions coming though, have a while to decide, thanks everyone.

Ons summer holiday when I was about thirteen my parents (being teachers, long hols) took us for a 6 week fly drive around America and Canada. New York to New Orleans, Arizona to San Diego, then across up to Toronto and back.

I was 13 at the time, and my memories of the trip stick with me to this day, and Corvette Stingrays have a special place in my heart for ever.

EDIT to say - this would be a great trip for you and yours!

Teens is ok, but I think his kids are too young to want to sit in a car for hours on end for four weeks.

I'd throw South East Asia into the mix as well. Although you'd be looking at slightly longer than 10 hours flying time, you'll find some great beaches and it's much cheaper than anything you'll find in Europe.

IME there were loads of western families over there enjoying the great weather, cheap food and entertainment. smile
