Hi,

Might be looking for an overnight stop about half way between Glasgow and London by road (M6 presumably). I figured somewhere in the vague area of Preston would be a good stopover.

Can anyone recommend anywhere - geographically or specifically - which is reasonably convenient for the motorway, which would be reasonably safe/discrete to park a car overnight? I don't want to leave it in a Travelodge car park (no roof, no security system etc) so I'm thinking maybe heading a little way off the beaten track to a BnB or pub somewhere. Anyway, area wise, is there anywhere nice about half way between London and Glasgow?

Personally I think you'd find nicer places if you keep going past Preston and stop somewhere towards the Lake District.

Another option would be Cheshire, plenty of nice country hotels around the south of Manchester.

Tickled Trout, Preston.

You can see it from the M6.

If you do go for Cheshire way, I can recommend the Etrop Grange Hotel, it's just down the M56 near the airport. Nice place.

Lancaster?

Stay here: http://www.thesunhotelandbar.co.uk/

And park at Parksafe just over the road. Your car is guaranteed not to be stolen - they have movement sensors under each parking bay, you can't get in the car park without a ticket and I think they have about 200 CCTV cameras. Its manned 24 hours a day. Loads of tasty metal parked in there normally.

Preston Marriot at Junction 32, well hidden but only 1/2 mile from the motorway. If you need garaging I may be able to help as only 1 mile away from the hotel.

I would stop a little further north around Junction 36 in the lakes, take a detour stay in a nice hotel and rejoin the M6 at Penrith to continue on to Glasgow.

A little out of your way, but i recommend a little town called Widnes

Beautiful views of the Widnes/Runcorn bridge over the Mersey (almost like the Sydney Harbour Bridge somemight say biggrin)

The locals are wonderful people, very friendly.

Fair point, but if I do the trip it'll be in an open Caterham with no weather gear, a competition seat and no fuel gauge (so frequent stops) and probably setting off in the afternoon. I just thought rather than trying to mission it down I'd take it a bit easy (coming back from Scotland towards London) and stay over somewhere.

If I did do it I think I'd be looking for something like a cheap BnB next to a good pub, rather than the more expensive hotels.

In that case, get off at Knutsford stop over somewhere round there then have a play over Cat and Fiddle, through the Peak District/Dovedale down to S of Derby, A38 to M6, M42, M40 and home.

But that's not exactly what you asked...

The Cta and Fiddle isn't a bad idea. Maybe stop over in the Buxton or something? Hmm, will take a look.

Drive past Preston, FFS. I say, come off the M6 at Preston and head up via the Trough of Bowland, stop over somewhere near Dolphinholme and drop back on at Lancaster. Fair detour but fabulous scenery and the best part of Lancashire without doubt.

Avoid Preston, it's an utter hole.

I lived in Preston, the birds fly upside-down.

As other folk have said, Lakes or Cheshire.

If it has to be Preston, my sister had her wedding do here : http://www.beestonmanor.com/index.php
