Considering a road trip down to the South of France in late summer.

Anyone got any tips, recommendations, warnings????

Just trying to do as much research as possible at the moment so nothing is set.

Thanks,

Either really???

Recently got a bit of spare time following business trip to Marseille. I deceided to get the train to Monaco for 1/2 a day before returning to Nice for the return flight.

I really enjoyed the whole thing so started thinking about spending a bit more time down there perhaps with a 10 day road trip?

So really open to suggestions on everything;
Where to go?
Which roads?
Where to stay?
etc....

The Gorge du Verdon & Gorge du Tarn are great roads to drive. The Milau Bridge is a spectacular sight to approach but IMHO once you are on it, it feels like any other bridge. Still work working it into your trip though.

I'll have a look when I get home to see what other roads we did...

I would recomend the road between Narbone and Nice. If you take the coast road it is very scenic and quite an interesting road.
Have fun thumbup

My first thoughts were;

Day 1 drive from the UK Manchester to somewhere interesting in Mid-Northern France, location TBC.
Day 2 head down towards the South coast going via Milau.
Day 3 Probably a day local, perhaps Nice?
Day 4 Move on but still haven't decided where to go from here?
....
Day 8 Head back north perhaps with overnight back in the Uk.
Day 9 Home for lunch and then Sleep...

Me and the wife are quite sad so we go most years and hire a cottage/villa.
Places to avoid:
Monaco, not really that special, very crowded full of tourists everything is rather expensive, nice cars and boats though
Grasse, had high hopes, not that much to see really, just a big town on a hill, traffic is poor
st tropez, bit like monaco really
Toulon, full of north africans, military port, occasional nice bit.

would recommend:
Montpellier: traffic and one way system is bit tiresome some city centre is really cool, loads of unusual shops and stuff.

Avignon: palace de (or du, can't remember) papes, lots of history, nice views, quite busy though, loads of cafes.

Uzes: just south west of Avignon, really nice small town, good food, really relaxed place, go to the town centre area, tons of restaurants and cafes etc.

Gorges Du Verdon, as earlier poster pointed out, really cool place, also castellaine (SP?) nearbly is nice (but small)

Pont du gard: approx 20 miles west of Avignon, huge roman aquaduct, quite cool.

Nimes: Big roman coliseum still used for concerts and shows, big town nice day trip.

Cevennes national park: hills, forests, windy roads, nice place, Anduze is on the south side nice little town with some good cafes etc.

Lac Du Ste Croix: very impressive, go hire a pedalo or canoe near the verdon river end, rest of the outskirts of the lake is a bit boring.

Saint Vallier De Thiey: On the route napoleon north of Grasse heading up into the south slopes of the alps, lots of caves and prehistoric stuff, good if you like underground stuff.

Frejus: Huge beach, tons of restaurants, roman remains and stuff, good place for kids.

Antibes: Big water park and sea life centre type thing.

Probably loads more but can't remember it all.

Edited for retarded spelling.
