I have been told by my folks (5min phone call) that I can use their apartment they have a share of as its up for next week and they cant go due to not thinking with my mum having cancer and sorting that out, whats it like to go and visit with the OH? we are both 30...

their apartment currently rents for £6k a week, so im assuming its one of the 5* places there.... but not sure which, any ideas?

Is it expensive for meals, drinks, etc?

Is there enough to do for a whole week?

I heard its mostly a place for old folk is this true?

IIRC from an old Travel Agent acquaintance, it comes under the heading "Newly-weds or nearly-deads".

Depends what you like to do on your hols. It is true that it is a place for the older generation, but you could keep yourself suitably occupied for a week - probably no more than that though.

Don't expect sandy beaches, as there aren't any. Those beaches which there are are rocky. There are some cracking walks in the mountains, plus some interesting and quite spectacular roads, especially on the north coast. Fancy a bit of big game fishing? - trips can be arranged.

Funchal is the capital, which is fairly small. Arriving by air is quite fun due to steep approach alongside the cliffs and the abrubt stop on the short runway, which is partially on stilts.

Eating out is ok. Do you like fish/seafood?

sea food is good.

I like doing culture things and not just lying on the beach... to give an example i went to asia to see the culture side of things and just chill while taking in the local atmosphere.

Me and the Mrs went on honeymoon. Enjoyed it but i doubt we would go back, if it was not for the amasing hotel we had i think it would have been a dissapointment. Not much to do but for chilling out then spot on.

The newly-weds and nearly deads comment isn't too far from the truth, though having said that it's a pretty nice place to visit. There's not a huge amount to do but there are some pretty walks (that sounds really gay!) along the levadas (the ye-olde irrigation system) that give you a great view of the island. Failing that you can always go to Blandy's and get stted on Madeira that was bottled when Napoleon ruled France, Churchill spanked the Nazis, the year you were born and so on. That's always a bit of a hoot. Don't be put off by the free glass of Madeira that you will invariably get in a restaurant, that stuff will dissolve your fillings, make sure you give the good stuff a try!

If you can, spend New Years Eve there, the weather is generally very nice at that time of year but more importantly the fireworks are utterly stupendous, they make the London ones look like a knock-off 99p packet of sparklers!!
