Getting Married Abroad...
Discussion
Morning all! I wasn't sure where to put this so mod's feel free to move it.
Me and the misses are planning on getting married abroad, probably Greece, and are aiming for 2011 realistically.
What we'd like to do, is rent a small hotel (10-20 rooms) completely and invited our nearest and dearest over. Probably have a few days at the pool before hand and maybe after, then off on honeymoon. This seem like a good idea?
Would be great having just the friends and family around the pool rather than loads of strangers. Or will this be massively expensive? We'd get all guests to pay for their flight over, but we'd pay for the room/food. Think thats fair! Maybe even organise a boat trip out somewhere on one of the days aswell.
Have you got to be in the country for a minimum amount of days before getting wed? Also what about photographers? They easy enough to find? Also the wedding dress? I take it we'd take it over with us?
As you can see I'm a bit clueless so any advice would be much appreciated!

I got married in Sri Lanka, honeymoon in the Maldives 4months ago and it was the best thing i've ever done..
Price depends on where your staying and what extra's your after, it can get very expensive!! We had 10 guests and the cost was close to £20k not including the honeymoon but that was at a 6 star Spa hotel for a week and we had all the extra's.., elephants, video's, 7 course meal, traditional dancers, wedding planner etc etc.. On the other hand a friend got married in Portugal last year and had a great time and it cost £3k..
Im guessing you'd have to be in the country a minimum amount of days before the wedding, between 3-5 days i reckon.
The hotel you get married at should be able to sort out photographers and a meal after the wedding.. I'd ask some guests to take a few bottles of champers with them to cut down some costs as no doubt it's mucho cheaper to buy it in the duty free than at the hotel/restaurant..
Talk to the airline about transporting the wedding dress, they'll no doubt allow you the extra weight and the dress makers will have some kinda travel box for the dress..
You'll need a "proof of status" which is just an affidavit signed by a solicitor, stating that neither of you has been previously married and that there is no legal objection to the marriage. Not sure if thats a normal thing or just something if your getting married abroad??
Other than that try not to get to sun burnt before the big day

I was due to get married in Italy in April, it definitely represented very good value and that was with a large guest list, hiring a hillside villa which included accomodation for about 50 people IIRC.
Admittedly if it had gone through the cost would have gone up a huge amount as the £/€ exchange rate went tits up between paying the deposits and the date of the weddding. So kinda lucky that it didn't happen.
Where in Italy was this? Any more info? Email me if you want. Would love some more info..Admittedly if it had gone through the cost would have gone up a huge amount as the £/€ exchange rate went tits up between paying the deposits and the date of the weddding. So kinda lucky that it didn't happen.
We got married in Italy 6 years ago and it was superb. We rented a farmhouse converted into 6 apartments, nice pool and wonderful views in Tuscany for ourselves and 11 immediate family. The ceremony was in Siena's town hall (not your typical town hall! you walked out onto Il Campo where the Palio takes place).
We used a company to sort the ceremony and legal side and to provide a photographer, this could have been done cheaper if we organised it ourselves but we didn't fancy taking on Italian red tape. The rest we did ourselves including the farmhouse and a chef that came to the farmhouse and prepared an amazing meal after the wedding.
We paid for everyone's accommodation for the week, they just paid for flights. We drove down and had a further week in Liguria plus 2 nights in a good hotel in Monaco on the way home. With all this and spending money we did it for £9k and it never once felt like we'd skimped on anything (OK, I didn't get away with hiring a Ferrari to drive to Siena on my wedding day).
Clearly the Euro is stronger now but you wouldn't regret getting married in Italy. Let me know if you want any more info.
