Off to Thailand in September for 16 days or so.

So far the plan is to fly into BKK and then jump on a plane up to Chiang Mai for 3 days or so, then flying south for 10+ days followed up by 3 days in BKK at the end. Reckon this is a good plan?

Anyone got any suggestions on the best way to get around? Flights with Air Asia are pretty cheap though.

Also - anyone got suggestions on places worth seeing down south? Heard Phuket and Pattaya are a bit dodgy so not too sure about them.

Cheers,

Mike

If you aren't bothered about seeing the bits in between then the Air Asia flights are so stupidly cheap that they do make sense if you're short on time.

They charge about £15 up to Chiang Mai and the same from BKK to Surat Thani where you can get the ferry to Samui, Phang An and Ko Tao.

In the south I'd recommend heading to Ko Tao, Krabi and Ko Phi Phi too. Phuket is very touristy and overdeveloped in my opinion as is Ko Samui for the most part. I'd also recommend looking at some of the places just south of BKK like Ko Samet and Koh Sok, not the usual suspects but very nice places indeed.

I really enjoyed the north of Thailand. Try and get a trek into the jungle as part of the Chiang Mai itinerary. I also quad biked up one of the mountains just outside Chiang Mai and took a bike up Doi Suthep. Both great fun.

Thailand is a very popular destination but you can certainly still find a holiday without a million Western students if you know where to look smile

Thanks for the post.

Quad biking sounds good, that said - do you need anti-malarials in the jungle areas?

Quite looking forward to it now, not expecting brilliant weather (sept can be rainy) but it'll be a break from work and it's not the UK so it's all good smile

Just hope I avoid the ladyboys... whistle

If you are going right into the jungles then anti-malarials are a good idea. I'd speak with your GP though as you might be OK without them.

The rainy season doesn't always mean rain for the whole day. A lot of the time it might just be a 2 hour blast or loads of rain at night rather than getting drowned all day smile

Ladyboys are everywhere yikes

I'll re-emphasise taking the overnight train to Chiang Mai, make sure it's a 2nd class sleeper.

Avoid Pattaya, there is absolutely nothing there apart from wes and the worst kinds of westerners you can possibly imagine.

Phuket is actually very nice, but can also be pricy, just avoid Patong if you aren't into nightlife.

I'd spend more time exploring Chiang Mai, probably one of my favourite places in Thailand.

I'd agree on the sleeper train route and of course the chatting up random ladies after a few bottles of Chang rofl
