We're off to the US for our summers hols next month and so far we have only booked flights. Can anyone recommend places to stay and things to do in New England in July with an 8 yr old?

Often go to France or the Alps in summer so want something to do or see rather than just veg on a beach. Any ideas

Old Sturbridge village might be worth a visit with an 8 yr old in tow .
www.osv.org . Went there 10 years ago and had a great time ( it may have changed of course since then !

Also www.vermontteddybear.com/Static/Factory-Tour.aspx .

Burlington in northern Vermont, on the shores of Lake Chaplain, is a nice family town. You can look out for 'Champ' - the US equivilent of Nessie, eat Ben & Jerry's - a local company, enjoy the pedestrian high street with some interesting crafty shops (a rarity in the US), and I would thoroughly recommend visiting the Burton snowboards factory if anyone is at all interested in skateboarding or snowboarding.

Lake Placcid in up state New York is a great base for anyone into outdoor sports. Lots of shopping, former Olympic City, and gateway to the Adirondack range. Note - easy to get between these too via the ferry (v nice) or go past Crown Point/Port Henry for a military history hit.

On a family holiday to New England when I was a kid my parents applied their usual tactic of turn up and see what you want to do on the day. this doesn't work as the US is too big. You ought to have a plan before you get there. As it was we visited Maine, saw all the crap bits and entirely missed Arcadia National Park which is supposed to be very good.

I'll second Old Stourbridge village and add Childrens Museum North - Easton village, Clarks Trading Post - North Woodstock and The Yankee Candle Company - Sth Deerfield Mass.
Why not hire a camper van to travel around.

yikes My god man are you mad?! Have you never read any Stephen King or Dean Koontz? Don't go there you will be killed to death slowly and painfully by forces you cannot see! I won't even fly over that section of the States1

Chatham on the Cape is spot on for the american seaside. Can send you details for a nice apartment rental there.

Stay at the Wolfeboro Inn, Wolfeboro. Its on Lake Winnipesaukee and is a great place. So friendly and the views and scenery are amazing.

I lived there for a year and loved every second. Do the boat tour of the lake, but MAKE SURE you go on the post boat, the Blue Ghost. You basically go with the post man who delivers mail to the island properties. Get ready to be amazed!

Also The Kancamagus Highway which is a 34.5 mi (55 km) long two-lane road that runs, east and west overall, through the White Mountains of New Hampshire in New England. An amazing drive, and if you combine it with a drive up Mount Washington, you will be in petrol heaven!

Bompey,

I couldn't find it on the net so I emailed the owner and they told me they'd sold it on. Worth a try. Chatham is great though would recommend it as a base for exporing Cape Cod.
