The wife and I will in September be heading out to the Amalfi Coast to spend a few days there.

I have done a little research on towns such as Positano and Sorrento, I was wondering if colleagues on here could possibly advise on a decent location where to base ourselves.

I have opted to drive out of Naples (very hurriedly and not stopping at any red lights, according to research!) and down to the coast. I appreciate this is going to be a challenge itself but I'm rather relishing it (I've seen the videos on the 'net).

Parking is a severe problem in some towns and we don't mind leaving the car at the hotel and taking a bus into town. As we have a major break later on in the year, in November, we are happy to settle for the low to mid range when it comes to hotels etc.

Any thoughts on this welcomed.

I would have thought that "Amalfi coast" and "budget" are words you would not normally see together in one sentence!

I'd include a trip to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius, and perhaps look at Capri through binoculars as if you're not up for spending money that's as close as you'd want to get to it!

Agreed!!!!

I'd go for the hotel arranged driver to meet you from the airport/train station though and drive you to Positano/Amalfi/Sorrento. Was 50 Euros each way and no parking problems.... There is NO parking around that coast unless pre-arranged with the hotel and travel between towns is best done by regular boats - they stop everywhere from Naples/Capri/Sorrento/Positano/Amalfi/Salerno(Yeuch! don't go) and many other towns....

It is soooooo beautiful though, hardly any English tourists, no thumping nightlife, no trouble - just wonderful!

You might not find parking at many 'in town' hotels, but there are lots around Sorrento that could be ideal, and Sorrento is a good base for visiting the area.

You could head a touch further south. Defo get cheaper accommodation here and lots of campsites if you're really on a budget... and if you do make sure you take in Paestum. Amazing place.
