I am in the process of planning a trip somewhere (as you can see by my other thread!), and am edging towards Australia or NZ. I do have major concerns about the flight though. I am 6ft3, and really don't fit into average sized economy seats (i am not fat... just tall!). I flew BA to Boston last year and couldn't fit both legs behind the seat and had to have a leg in the isle, which then led to the trolley being rammed into me for 7hrs.

Which are the best airlines for legroom and quality on the route down to Australia/NZ? i can see from SeatGuru that Malaysia Air, and Emirates give 34inch pitch on their 777's, rather than the standard 32inch, but are they good airlines? I would like to try an A380, but all of those seem to be 32inch pitch? (eg. Singapore Air).

Business is not an option unfortunately as it's about £4k, and no one does premium economy on that route frown I can't really rely on getting exit row seats either as you can't ever pick the seat, or even see what's available before you have paid frown

Air New Zealand fly to Oz and NZ (obviously!!) and have Premium Economy. You can fly to Auckland on ANZ via LA or Hong Kong (or go RTW). And I have a contract with ANZ :cough: wink

From my experiences Emirates are great.

I have flown about 5 times with them in the last 3 years to Dubai and Bangkok.
No complaints at all.

Also Eva Air Evergreen Deluxe might be worth a look?
They serve LHR to BNE and offer 38" seat pitch.

Not according to that site they aren't biggrin

They are 4-star, Malaysia and Singapore are 5-star though.

I hate to say this, but my experience is that Brunei air have the most leg room in economy and the cheapest fare to Aus. Bit of a long way as it stops in Dubai and Brunei, food on long haul is OK but within SEA is awful, used to allow you to take your own drink, but no longer, so no alcohol

When i flew to New York last on BA, we checked in 24 hours before the flight online, which meant we could choose our seats. We had the very first row after premium economy, which just has a wall in front of the you, instead of seats. Much more leg room there.

I'm not sure whether Emirates are flying the 380 out to Australia but on the LHR to Dubai they are and the legroom on that is really good in economy.

The legroom on the A380s with everyone is 32inch frown

Well having flown economy to Dubai on a 380 a few weeks ago I can assure you that the legroom was really good, better than I've met previously in economy (and I do a lot of flying). If it's really 32 inch then they must package it very well.

Qantas and Virgin (and probably others) all do premium economy on the LHR > SYD route, usually about twice the price of standard economy.

If you can get exit or bulkhead seating legroom will not be a problem in any plane.

I had a friend in Shannon who would do his best to move throwers to first class, or barring that, a bulkhead or exit row.

Once I had a great seat with plenty of leg room on a flight to Boston. Trouble was that a fellow had a heart attack and they decided that my legroom would do fine for the resucitation efforts. Turned into a long flight! Not sure how the fellow got on in the end...

There's often some great business class deals to Aus/NZ with the lesser known airlines.

And EVA economy is 33", but feels more.

Whatever you do, don't fly Thai as the seat backs are for short people and non-adjustable (certainly the case on LHR-BKK).

My handy tip - empty out the contents of the seat pocket of the seat in front and throw it on the floor. This can free up an inch of knee room. Apart from that, go for an aisle seat.

My handy tip - never go for an aisle seat if you want to sleep.

Flew LHR-JNB on Sat night, I got an exit seat, so plenty of leg room - but I was being continuously bumped and woken throughout the night. Ended up with close to zero sleep.

I have to always have an aisle seat. With the seats reclined i cannot physically fit both my legs behind the seat in front... or that was the experience i had with BA to Boston last year. Fun.

Emirates economy to Australia is £800, business is £2k frown

BA are one of the worst, I've found. 31" pitch, I believe. One good feature on EVA is that when the seats recline, the seat base moves forward too. Gives you a slightly flatter 'bed' and those in front move further away as they recline. Sort of maintains your knee room.

As Puggit says, the flipside of an aisle seat is more interruptions.
