My girl and I have decided to go abroad instead of spending a fortune in the UK. We have decided on Barbados, but not sure where to stay. Anyone have any first hand advice or recommendations?

Thanks in advance

hi matey,

yes, have been many times over the past 20 years.

Can suggest a lot of places but it depends on the type of place you want & budget?

To be fair, everywhere looks nice on paper but there is a lot of variation on quality..

Having stayed at a few of the high end hotels I would now actually always stay here, its not strictly a hotel & if pool is important to you then it doesnt have one but its a fantastic place to really relax. Great food, superb service and great rooms right on beach..

We haven't set out a budget. I have no idea what you get for your money. We have sorted the flights seperately, so its just a accomodation. What do you get for £200 per night? Anything any good? or do we need to spend £300-400 per night? I reallu have no idea.

Hope this helps you to help me.

ok well.. in my humble opinion...(and I've stayed a fair few nice places)

the best places are..

lonestar (see previous link) - appreciate you dont like sea though..

Coral reef Club

http://www.coralreefbarbados.com/

The house (quite small, boutiquey not too expensive either but small pool)

http://www.thehousebarbados.com/index.cfm

Then you get the more traditional hotels like Royal Pavilion. Not my taste but each to their own.

There are lots of other budget hotels.. Tamarind cove isnt bad, Turtle beach, Colony club not bad either.

I'd stay away from the Crane on the south coast - it gets raved about but I thought it was a bit cr@p to be honest.

Happy to offer more advice if u need. good luck

We have done lots of looking and i think we have settled for mango bay, its the comprime between money and nice.

We are going on the 15thFeb 2010 and staying for 7 nights, we will then fly from there to Las Vegas for 6 nights and then onto Los Angeles for 6 nights, then back to the uk.

Thats the wedding and honeymoon sorted, do you think sounds like a good time, It does to us, but you never no if your going right or wrong.

Hindsight has 20/20 vision!

If you have anymore advice i'd love to hear it

Cheers

Seriously!?....then you're choosing the wrong destination....Barbados (and the rest of the Caribbean) is all about the sea - the beautiful beaches, crystal waters, swimming with the turtles etc.....because without it there is very little to do and away from your hotel its a stehole...but the sea is glorious.

Go to Dubai,Vegas or elsewhere where you'll get a better deal all-round and more to do away from the poolside......

The thing is I know its pathetic, we were at my dads place in marbella and i thought, just go in the sea and i would get used to it and be fine. Wrong... I ran out of the sea - i was so scared. Its so dumb, but i cant help it.

I have been to dubai a couple of times, vegas is for the honeymoon. I would like to experience the caribean, but i just can not go in the sea.... oh its hard work this.

I would hate to waste the week, but i know she will love it and i suppose thats all that matters. I may get a bit bored, but it wont be that bad,

Am i being silly

Cheers chaps

Cheers Craig, I hadn't thought of that. I have spoken to a couple of hotels, they have asked me to e-mail all the details and they will get back to me with a quote. I will haggle away. I would love your recomendations, if you have time at some point.

Regards

restaurants are as follows, bank on all (of these) being quite expensive and book all in advance of going and ask for waterside tables at all of them, mention honeymoon.

In no particular order (google them for info):

The Cliff
Lonestar
Daphnes
The Tides
The Fishpot

Go to Sandy Lane (just so you've seen it!)

There are cheaper ones, cocomos is a good beach bar and also try to go to the friday night fish fry at oistins, good fun.

enjoy.

Well if you are going to sit round the pool all day it should be a decent one - I usually stay at the Hilton at Needhams Point, the view from my balcony last time looked like this:

Pools are great, food is great, private beach which is closed off from the sea - generally no fish.. walking distance into Bridgetown (about 30min walk, or risk your life with a local bus/taxi)...but its pricey.

Next time I go (I travel on business, so go fairly regularly) one of the locals has suggested this place as an alternative, but haven't tried it yet:
http://www.accrabeachhotel.com/site/main.html

It is in a slightly better location with more to do locally.....and there's a big Chefette nearby which sells good ice cream and of course the famous Roti.
