For tolls - do some planning on the www.viamichelin.com tool smile

Not hired in Italy for over a decade, so I won't answer that one.

Tolls, see here:

http://www.autostrade.it/autostrade/percorso.do

Enter your start point in the "partenza" box and your end point in the "arrivo" box and then click "ok".

The next page will give you more precise start and end points but just click "ok" again.

The cost is next to "Pedaggio per auto/moto"

Hire cars: I always use Hertz,Avis or Europcar just for the backup in case of problems/accidents/breakdowns and half decent cars.

If you go with Budget or the cheaper firms you may be told you're getting a Mini Cooper but it will probably be a piece of Korean ste. This will be covered by the wording "or similar type vehicle"

I've used Hertz or Avis for years and no probs - in fact I often get upgraded by simply asking nicely. If they say no, its usually cheaper to upgrade at the check in desk than on-line. Usually I book a VW Golf and get a BMW 320/Merc C180/200/220 or an Alfa 159. Sometimes have to pay about £10/day extra. Depends how busy they are and the mood of the check in person.

Get 'accidental damage' cover in the UK before you go. Pay for the compulsory 3rd party and basic insurance but save yourself the €10-15 per day for the all risks verson supplied by the hire company. For the £50/60 UK upgrade you are coverd for hire cars for up to 30 days for one year - including windscreens and tyres and underbody which are usually excluded from hire car insurance cover. Simply pay the excess (usually €500 - €1500) on your credit card if the car gets damaged and claim when you get home.

Motorway Tolls in Italy are a fraction of the French charges - typically €10 for a whole day's drive. You usually get charged for the Autostrada but the Superstrada (good dual carrigeways built by Mussolini) are usually free. Motorways busier than France but usually a reasonably good standard of driving if you don't count the tailgaters. South of Rome the driving can become a little hairy - in some towns and cities only tourists stop at red traffic lights for example!

Sometimes on the motorways there can be very little advance warning of a turn off - often only when you're at the turn off does the sign appear. In pre-sat nav days I nearly missed flights by seeing the airport turn off as we sailed past.

I wish.

In Italy approx 400km will cost about €30.
