Going on a stag there soon and looking for recommendations for good bars/areas, and...ahem....gentlemans establishments.

Thanks!

Good places change regularly.

Stay clear of 'Local Bars' late on - gets heated sometimes.

Most Taxi drivers get a kick back from the gentlemen areas, but know the best ones.

Ask the Hotel barman - they tend to know when and where is best. Last time ours opened a private area of the hotel and got some waitresses and lap dancers in for us. Worked out better value than going into the clubs.

Bigger bars in the centre are OK and decent enough.

All in all like any other Eastern European city.

Excellent place, gentlemans establishments appeared a little pricey for that bit of europe.

From my experience when i went (not on a stag), the best places are quite hard to find and we wouldn't have found them without a local!

In terms of stag locations, i think they're all fairly easy to find in the town centre, but they're very tailored to stag parties and not really 'local'. I.e. they're the same as clubs anywhere else in the world.

Drinking green beer in the main square was a delightful experience. The town centre is genuinely lovely, and it's well worth looking round the castle.

As for stag 'stuff', not a clue, I'm afraid.

Am I the only one a little let down that one of europes hidden gems has fallen into just another destination for drunken stag / hen parties?

Used be a lovely place, so friendly, bustling but not overrun, and certainly doesn't sound like the place descibed in the above posts. But the last time I was there was almost 20 years ago..

ho hum. bar hunbug smile

Nope, see my post.

Stag dos are great fun, but Prague has been ruined as a result and I fear Krakow is going the same way. frown

depends where you go. i was there last year with a small group of friends. we met probably half a dozen other english people in 4 days, largely because we avoided anything that looked like a suitable stag drinking venue. had a ball of a time going to places recommended by the hostel receptionist, made new friends easily in bars who took us to other venues we wouldn't have found. can't imagine a stag group being approached/treated the same.

i would add that 'the black gallery' is the only place open for drinking until morning. as its the only place, it can be hit and miss whether you have a great time or the local nutters want to scare the tourists by showing them their hunting knife at close quarters........

You've always been able to get the green beer (certainly 20 years back), but I agree that the character has changed, not necessarily for the better. Then again, it brings money into the town, which was badly needed.

It's easy to avoid the stag-do crowds, but it's a bit embarrassing when people look at you as a bunch of drunken Brits go past. You just KNOW the assumption they're making.....all Brits are louts.

do you remember any particular places or areas that were good? I've heard Kazimierz (the Jewish quarter) is supposed to be quite nice. for the record, I too will be trying to avoid typical stag type venues (apart from the obligatory strip bars), can't stand the idea of a bunch of p**sed up british t*ats being noisy and offensive.

kazimierz is to the south of the city centre so has less bustle and some nice relaxed 'individual' places. there was a cool bar that had telephones on the tables that you could use to call other tables in there. this was fantastic fun after a few beers when it got busy smile

the only club i can remember the name of is lubu dubu. imagine if you owned a flat decorated in a 1970's style and you decided to do nothing at all to it other than take out the furniture and kitchen before putting a bar in the hallway and opening a club. this is lubu dubu.its great, but only the one toilet!

the thing to remember is that one building could have 3-4 bars/restaurants/shops in it. one may be in the cellar, another on the second floor, one round the back in a courtyard etc. etc. its not hard to find somewhere decent and not far to the next one if its crap.

Was cracking when I was there for new year 2007/8. But then we didn't see any other brits. biggrin

Rdza is a decent normal nightclub btw. Cien has two rooms so offers more variety. Both just off yon big massive square.
