We are thinking of visiting Sorrento for a holiday this year… found some nice hotels with good reviews.

Anybody been recently and any advice. For example, is it an expensive place, eg drinks, meals taxi’s car hire etc.

It is a lovely place. You should hire a car and tour the coast, Amalfi, Positano....beautiful. Maybe take a trip into Naples. Also take a ferry trip to Capri.

Prices are not cheap. A beer will cost you maybe 4 Euro, a Coffee 3 Euro. A good meal will be 25 Euro a head.

As with most European touristy destinations it isn't that cheap.

I went a few years ago and would highly recommend it though. It is a nice little town, and also a great base for seeing the rest of the area: Amalfi coast, Capri, Pompeii, Naples, Vesuvius etc.

Naples is certainly an interesting experience! You can get there by boat or train, to Capri by boat and other places by bus if you don’t rent a car (and I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t!). Some of the hotels in Sorrento are quite far out in the hills around, so check where you are if you want to be close to the centre of town.

It is really nice, as well as driving the Amalfi coast a boating trip down the coast is very nice too. Capri is a great day out as is Naples and Mount Vesuvious and Pompei.

They do offer day trips to Rome but I really don't think it is worth it.

Try some Citronella (sp?)

Also worth a visit is Herculaneum (mini Pompeii, and better preserved) and Paestum (large temples, a little further afield south of Salerno).

I'd also recommend Solfatara - a small volcanic crater with bubbling mud and a heavy sulphur stench - said to be the gates to Hades.

Beware if you visit Naples. This is one of those places you don't wear jewelery, posh watches etc and keep your wallet/bag in sight/touch. I'd advise against driving within the city itself - most rules of the road do not apply (including red lights).

One of Europe's top destination areas for seeing and doing IMO - do it!

If you can, try & stay at least 1 night in Capri, it's so much nicer once all the day trippers have gone. Fabulous restaurant there too:-

I was there last year for my sisters wedding in Positano - so did not get to do that much exploring as we were busy with other things. I thought that Sorrento was a little bit spoilt, but any of the surrounding towns on the Amalfi coast were very nice.

Pompeii was worth a visit..... but that is about all I can tell you. A very beautiful part of the world - although personally I prefer the East Coast of Italy!

Sorrento is not a beach resort - it has cliffs and harbours, so if sunbathing/swimming is important you need a hotel with a good pool.
