Hi,

As the title says 10 nights in Bol on the island of Brac.

I have been checking online about things to see on Brac, Hrav and the old town of Split, are there any other recommendations?

Thanks.

I went to Croatia in May a couple of years ago, in general at that time everything was fairly quiet, but it's a pretty cool place, with the nice clear seas, specatcular scenery and old coastal island towns of the Dalmatian coast, with enough in the way of touristy stuff to keep you occupied for a week or so. It was relatively cheap to eat and drink out comapred to the Eurozone (not sure what the GBP and Kuna is like now though). Not speaking Croatian was not a major issue, but like anywhere it helps if you even have the very basics.

We were on a sailing boat so we made the most of the island life and visited Bol, Hvar, Stari Grad and Split over 5 days. Easyjet flight was about £50. I'd say that boat trips are essential to any holiday to this area.

Bol is a fishing/sailing port with a few bars & restaurants where we stayed. Good for a night or two. We enjoyed a massive feast of barbequed lamb and seafood at the old winery on the quayside. Per head it ended up about £20 including wine, which with the lamb is a local speciality. Up the coast there is an interesting and pretty beach on a spit which is in loads of postcards, worth a look, but will be very busy in summer.

Hvar is a glamorous island sailing port, a couple of hours from Split by boat with cocktail bars along the renovated quayside and overlooked by a venetian castle. I had the best seafood meal EVAR here in a backstreet restaurant, again for not very much Kunar.

Split is a very interesting city to visit with lots of old buildings, shops, bars etc around the port and a lively vibe. Definitely worth a look. We were there at the time of their patron Saint's day and there was a big parade through town (including people we assumed were city dignitaries dressed up like Chicago mafiosi from the 40s, and mountain men dressed in furs with muskets and daggers slung over their backs) and a massive fireworks display in the evening.

My overall feelings about the area was that it was good value, and a lot of work had been done recently to renovate the main towns for tourism. I'm not sure if it was because it was early in the season, or there is still a big hangover from communist and Balkan war times, but I always got the feeling that we weren't too welcome, and they haven't quite got the hang of the fact that if you make your visitors happy they will spend more money!

I'd definintely go back to Hvar though, as I'm a sucker for sitting by the Med drinking cocktails watching the people go by and the boats sailing in and out of the harbour.

Ha ha, I remember now, Carpe Diem was one of the places we went to in Hvar, great mojitos, but we were some of the only customers so it seemed pretty cool. I think perhaps we were the choppers, especially as one of our party decided to try and get the barman to get him some E's - the complete *rse!

Great pic BTW!
