Planning on spending 2 or 3 weeks covering a chunk of Europe in July and planned on crossing Switzerland. I've looked through some embassy sites and to me it seems the answer would be yes, and it's a right fanny on to get one. Yet I read about people nipping over for hoons all the time and nobody ever mentions it.

If you have an EU passport there should be no problem.

Switzerland joined the Schengen area in Dec 2008 - wiki link

You still get duty free though - so customs rules apply (shouldn't be a problem on a bike!)

We did it last year on a UK passport and never got one. You may have to get a Vignette though for driving on the motorways (again we didn't bother with that either).

I've been through and around Switzerland many times on a bike and never needed a visa. I had heard they're a bit hot on the motorway stickers though, so if I thought I was using them (and sometimes there is no option!) I got a sticker. Never been pulled, though.

If you have an EU Member State passport, you don't need a visa for Switzerland.
