Do it - spend most of your time in the Eastern Cape, but don't forget a couple of days in Joburg and some safari!
The Rand is still weak, so once you are out there the place is cheap.

Great fun in the dunes at Atlantis, just 20km north of Cape Town.
All the other beaches are 'off limits' to vehicles.
