My 40th is next year and we're planning 2 weeks somewhere nice, went to St Lucia on a cruise 2 years ago and of all the islands it was pretty mucht he only one that I wanted to return to.

Current thoughts are somewhere like Margigot Bay which just looks lovely or the Maldives, budget is about 5-7k in total and we'd want business class flights, any thoughts?

Do you scuba dive? If so, the Maldives. ETA - Fly Monarch and upgrade to premium class?

Or, if you want the caribbean, you could do worse than Tobago (could stay in the Coco Reef hotel, which has a private beach etc..) though the diving isn't as good as the Maldives (there is a rather good wreck you can swim through). Plus Tobago there is a LOT to do for such a small island, and going out to eat of an evening is good fun too...

St Lucia scuba is not as good as the Maldives, but it's not at all bad.

Never been to st lucia, but i know someone who's been to both and prefers the maldives. Just depends what you like i suppose. I've been to the maldives, going again soon, love it smile Some people say theres not much to do, but there are plenty of excursions and diving/snokeling is fantastic smile

For diving in St. Lucia the best place to go is Anse Chastenet: they have a very good PADI Gold centre there. It is fantastic diving around the Pitons and it is only minutes off the resort. They have two hotels at Anse Chastenet - the original and a place called Jade mountain. Although quite pricey, I can thoroughly recommend Jade, and definitely holiday in a lifetime experience.

I'll scond that. The Scub St Lucia operation at Anse Chastanet is very good.

You can stop off in Dubai (Monarch airlines do a 2 hour refuel stop there which gives you just enough time to leg it to the shops) to collect a nice watch.........

And depending on the time of year, could dive with Whaleshark or Manta..

I was in the water with the Manta several times last October. I'd love to see the Whale Sharks. Any idea what time of year?

Off the top of my head, Reethi Beach around July/August. White Sands/Ari Beach/Ari Atoll I think around Sept/Oct.

I am pretty sure there are a few websites that will have the calendars though.......

No, they are direct from LGW to MLE. Wouldn't really recommend them to be honest.

Personally I've always used Emirates to get there.

For the adventurous amongst us, I'd recommend using Singapore Airlines for a great city-break en-route.

I run out of air too - ask them for the Jumbo tank! Surpised you say they were crap - I've always found Bernd and the team there really professional. How long ago did you go?

I thought they were very good. How is your running out of air the fault of the instructors? Did they underfill your tank or did you gulp it?

Not trying to have a go at all. Did the instructors have to deal with someone else? Are you experienced enough for them not to worry about ascending with you? Did you have a marker bouy? Did something happen on your dive that increased you heart rate? Are you aeorbically fit? The trick to making your air/nitrox last for the full hour is to be totally relaxed, physically (especially aeorbically fit), take long slow breaths and do not spend a great time at depth (i.e. under 30 metres).

Resurfacing alone is something that my brother and I (along with my girlfriend when she dives with us) have been doing for a while now as we are generally the last of the groups to surface and the dive instructors were happy to let us explore on our own.

Like I said, not trying to have a go at you but sometimes things occur underwater and the instructors have to prioritise. Dealing with a panicing/unresponsive diver at 30m is not fun.

If your unable to surface on your own, should you be there at all. Most places these days insist on a computer if your not sure of your asent then this tells you all you need to know.

If you had a buddy and he/she got into trouble, do I take it you die, or help them to the surface.

Instructors have a duty to all in their group, my guess is they watched you asend to the surface and then the group carried.
