Hi,

Going on Hols in June to Cannes and were driving down there.

HAve booked a hotel in Beaune as a stop off on the way down but need one on the way up (hotel is fully booked on way up!)

Am I about right in thinking Calais - Beaune is ok drive in the day?

Then Beaune - Cannes....

Any ideas for the way back?

Beaune is a handy stop off point for the night - both Calais-Beaune and Beaune-Cannes are long half days, but as above it's doable in a very long day.

How about Macon, and trying out some of the local plonk?

I'll vote for Epernay too. Have done this journey with and without a stop. With a stop is much more relaxed.

We stayed at http://www.villa-eugene.com/accueil_uk.htm

It has secure parking and is lovely inside. Easy walk to into Centre Ville past all the Champagne houses (Moet etc.). We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

Damn the link didn't work so I deleted my replyhehe

4 hours, leisurely lunch, 4 hours, easy. Calais is only 3 hours so it sets you up well for the last leg.

Nope. The restuarant was closed (IIRC Sunday night) so we ate somewhere local they "recommended". Ie it's a good restuarant but it's very local. It's the only time I've ordered terrine and had the waitress leave the full 2kg terrine dish on the table for me to help myselflick

We didn't eat at the hotel either, they recomended a number of places in town.

Cannes - Epernay is still a fair journey, TomTom reckons 8 hours which feels about right once you've had a stop for lunch and fuel.

It's worth allowing yourself a little time in Epernay to have a gawp at the Champagne houses and maybe go on a tour. If your pressed you only need half a day.

We've also stopped over in Troyes once when doing this journey, nice town, just stayed in one of the big chain (Accor) hotels. Troyes is 7 hours from Cannes.

Blue - not that I'm doubting tom-tom, but your timings seem quite high!!

I would expect you to be able to cover Cannes to Calais in about 10 hours and Calais to Epernay is about 3 hours........ how does Tomtom work out it's average speeds for the timing?

Bearing in mind the speed limit is 14mph higher and you can maintain a very good average speed over here unlike the uk?

Google reckons 8 hours too. That'll be at 130kph though, so if you're happy cruising at 150...

OK, as someone who lives in France and has a house near Cannes, let's do some maths.

Cannes to Calais 750miles/1205kilometres
Speed limit; 80mph/130kmh

Set cruise control at 80mph means that the drive if this were the average speed would take 9hours 20 mins.... however on a 750mile trip you're going to need at least 1 if not 2 tanks of fuel... allow 40 minute break each time and hey presto cannes to calais in 10 hours without breaking the speed limit.

Now assume you think you've got a long trip ahead and lots of miles and don't care about how many peopls will die as a result of your recklessness and let's assume you set the cruise at 90mph yikes your drive time will be 8 hours 20 minutes now you will still only need 2 fuel stops (allow 40 minutes) so the trip is 9 hours..... However due to the trauma you've caused yourself by being so reckless and speeding you could use the other hour to seek councelling.........

As I suggested previously Cannes to Calais 10hours without being silly!
