My wife and I are flying to Australia and New Zealand in November and as a surprise, I wanted to include a four-day spell in Fiji.

With the political situation tense, I have been warned off Fiji.

Could I please have suggestions for a destination to replace Fiji, in the Pacific. (Hawaii possibly?)

Thanks

Cook Islands. Doesn't have the well-known name, but it's a stunning place and would fit into the route easy enough.

readitNew Caledonia

It's about the same distance from Auckland to Noumea as it is to Nadi. Go and stay in the Isle of Pines area. If you want luxury try Le Meridien Ile des Pins. It's only got 39 rooms, so small and cosy.

Jasandjules - Palau & Yap are not readily accessible from NZ (or Oz for that matter) You would have to fly up to Manila and then across from there. Not worth it for 4/5 days IMHO.

If you dive, and are in the area (i.e. not sat in the UK!) then it COULD be worth a shot? (Always assuming that you are not likely to be heading back to the Pacific area next year/in the coming years of course)..

Hi Tizer,

I was faced with the same dilema a couple of years back.
In my opinon, Fiji is a bit...... well Plastic!!!

You need to get off Fiji to the smaller islands.
We stayed here: http://www.navinifiji.com.fj/

Total paradise!!!!!!!!!!!!! everything you would expect from a castaway island!

I hope this helps

Problem is, it's about 10 hours from Auckland to Manila and there's a possibility that they would have to overnight in Manila before flying on to Palau. Also, there are no through flights from Manila to Yap (via Palau) anymore and so they would have to have a day room in Palau or worse overnight there, before flying on to Yap.

It would only really be feasible to do en route to Auckland, but again would only work if Manila was a scheduled stopover on their routing. If not then it would involve additional flights.

For the sake of 4 or 5 days it's just not worth it in my opinion.

Tizer, I wouldn't dismiss Fiji out of hand. It's constantly having coups and political upheaval! I would only NOT go it the FCO said don't. If you get away from the tacky Coral Coast on Viti Levu then it really is a beautiful country. And the people are some of the friendliest in the world.

I would seriously consider here as a place worth staying. There are few places I have been where I have left with a lump in my throat. It's a truely magical resort...

Yep. We didn't explore the main Island etc, we got the Yasawa Flyer?? Boat through some great little islands and stayed at a place called Orsmans Bay. Again, very castaway, loved it.
If you're out that way, I would find it hard to miss.
What about the Cook Islands?
