Can somebody please explain to me why the costs of flights seem to be so random...

Just looking into honeymoon destinations at the moment, one of them being Malaysia so we'd be flying into KL.

The flight direct to KL is Malaysian Airlines is £521, but if I look at going to Singapore, via KL on leaving Heathrow on the same flight, the cost is £477! Why is it cheaper to go further?

Also, why are the cost of one way flights to a destination twice the price of a return?! Been looking at flying into Nairobi and then back from a different location. Return flight £450ish, single flight £750! Doesn't make sense to me...

You should try doing flight searches as a day job Mark rofl
Logic rarely seems to apply other than it depends what seat classes are available on the specific contract you view and at the specific time you check.
On the second example it could be that there is a cheap contract for returns and there are free seats whereas they don't do good rates for a single trip and only have expensive seats free as a result!

As above, logic doesn't apply to anything that airlines do!!! They are a law unto themselves...

Have developed a Travel system and have access to lots of airline contracts and believe me they are a sight to behold.

They have multiple classes within the known classes of economy, premium, business etc. and each class can be priced in a different way. So for your example the two flight prices come from different classes within your overall class (I assume economy from the prices). As to why it costs less to go further who knows. Think about the fuss they make about overweight baggage and yet the weight variation between adults can be 30 - 40 Kilos. When will they start weighing us and charge a chunky premium wink

Totally agree, everything seems to be made up...
I never did get an answer back from Ryanair on what their taxes cover and why, if at least some of them cover government taxes and local taxes to airports as they state, why these taxes can suddenly disappear from the cost of flights and why some everyone seems to pay different taxes depending purely on luck of the draw.

Always assumed it cost less to go further because they were trying to attract you to fly a route that is more hassle with a stop over rather than fly someone else who goes direct. Ie you are looking at the fare that is put in to compete with the Singapore airlines direct flight to Singapore as opposed to the direct ML flight to KL which would probably be cheaper with a stop on Singapore airlines.

Different fare rates are just a cheeky way of encouraging people to book early, it means that tour ops and agents can blag bookings by telling potential customers that the cost will increase if they don't book immediately. It works very well!

We had with Air Canada from Manchester to Toronto - it was cheaper to fly on to Boston and the agent said it was because of competition on a direct Manchester to Boston route.

Didn't BA get a lot of flak when it was discovered that it was cheaper to pick up a BA flight in somewhere else in Europe, fly to LHR and the across the Atlantic? They said it was to compete with direct flights by the local flag carrier.

Not only that but they know people pay more for direct flights.
