I've been over a few times recently all work related unfortunatley, the Merc museum is a must.
The town centre of Stuttgart is nice, if you start near the shopping main area, just keep heading along the pedestrian area away from the main train station and you'll find quite a few restaurants, pavement bars and cafes, strangley enough there is an aussie place in the bar/eating areas, can't remember the name (outback or something similar) near the giant rotating granite ball (if you see it you'll understand), but great food.
newer bars are mostly like any you find in major european cities.
If you need to get around in the city centre and surrounding area, use the U-bahn train system, it's an education in how to get public transport absolutley right.
Stuttgart footy team have their staduim (Daimler-Gottleib i think) near the Merc museum, great to catch a game if you like that sort of thing.
Make sure you avoid german red wine, it's foul, try the wiessbier it's interesting, for saftey stick to pilsner.
Make sure you don't have any vegetarians, Germans don't understand the concept.
