CAA- Have you got your money back yet?
Discussion
Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone else is still waiting for money back from XL going bust?
I was supposed to go to Sharm with the OH in September, but obviously that didn't happen.
I heard (on here) that it should have been refunded by now (supposedly it was meant to be back in Feb!)
Any thoughts, experiences, rants at the f
k ups that are the CAA?
cheers!

Have you got things a little confused? CAA are the Civil Aviation Authority and manage flights, they are the group who made sure no one was stranded by XL by organising flights etc.
Since XL were a tour operator / charter airline, they are covered under ATOL and hence you should use them as the cover. If you paid by credit card then just get your money back through that route - otherwise its ATOL and make sure you claim is being processed. Its an insurance scheme and you will need to make sure you haven't been forgotten.

ATOL = CAA (near enough anyway)off_again said:

The CAA are the ones who are supposed to be refunding money back to me because the flights were ATOL protected. The claim was done through the tour operator that we booked with but the money is definately coming from the CAA. The CAA run the ATOL bond system that compensates people when a tour operator or airline goes bust.
As far as I'm aware the amount of money in the pot is about 10% of a companies turnover................So not exactly a small amount.
As for the CAA working quickly...............Not a chance, they seem to delight in being as slow as possible and their ability to dodge a straight question is legendary.

It is becoming a total nightmare. We booked through Travelcare/Co-op back in June for a holiday in September which was due to start just days after XL went bust. We were told last week by the CAA that although we paid the balance in June, the money from the Co-op should have been paid to XL at the end of July, they never paid it! It was eventually paid to the administrators on 28th January 2009.
The latest information we have from the CAA is they have now requested more ATOL receipts to prove the Co-Op are licensed to sell Cosmo Holidays. If these are not satisfactory we will be getting yet another form to fill in. Apparantly the financial information sent by Travelcare was rejected 3 times before being accepted by CAA.
We have also been told that it could take another 18 months to sort.
Do you think it is too late to take up the claim with the credit card company or am I better of just hanging on and waiting?

That is ridiculous. We were supposed to go a few days before they went bust too. I paid it in several payments so i didnt see the point in claiming through the credit card. It would have been a mess trying to sort out the 3 different cards i paid on. In your case, i would get on to your credit card company and ask them. It might be quicker.
