Seriously thinking about taking some time out and may try and get 4-6 months off work.

I don't really want to do the round the world thing as I believe you'd still be hard pushed to make a relaxing time out of it. You'd always be thinking about the next place to visit and planning the next stop.

Think i'd prefer to concentrate on a couple of areas - maybe rent a cheap flat for a month at a time.

So where would you go ?? Like the idea of South America (never been), been to Asia last year (Thailand/Cambodia) more to see there though, what about India ? Far East - China/Japan ?

Colonies for me - Canada, America, New Zealand, Australia. The food is comprehensible and so is the language smile

I've no idea what your finances are like but spending a long time in developed nations will eat a lot of money; especially if you like your beer.

I'd consider South America or Asia for economic reasons. They also tend to be much more of a contrast to the UK.

[That said, the weak pound will have reduced your spending power by about 50% in the last year]

I spent about 2/3 months in Peru, Chile and Argentina, not doing much just seeing the sites taking in the things to do and all that.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Switzerland, ski season for 6 months.

If summer, walk across the Pyrenees on one of the Grand Randonnees. Or a loop tour of Mont Blanc, across to Zermatt and then around the Matterhorn.

If you don't wan the stress of travel organisation while you are away (and typically ths is a 2-3 day a week job on the road), have you considered one of the "epic" overland sytle trips?
Something like this:
http://www.dragoman.com/destinations/tripdetails.p...

Probably works out cheaper in the long run. Plenty of other companies around as well (kumka, budget expeditions, explore, GAP etc). Trouble is you will be stuck in a truck for six months with some of the same people, with other groups coming in and out. Couple of my friends did 6 months doing the length of South america, then 4 months doing the length of Africa.

Alternatively, get a Hilux, fix a tent to the roof and drive round africa. Met a guy in Ugnada doing exactly this, totally self contained and having a great time. Bit lonely though.

Quite like that idea ! Although aren't vehicles very expensive over there ? Remember that Top Gear challenge where they bought those old cars for something like a 1000 thousands each.

Might do a couple of those overland trips, probably get you further a field that you would normally get.

Europe, including all of the eastern European countries, Serbia, Croatia etc. However, 6 months wouldn't be very long to see it all properly though but at least you'll see the largest variety of cultures within the time available.
